Assessment item 4 - Interactive Oral
Assessment item 4 - Interactive Oral
Length: 15 - 20 Minute Interactive Oral
Write a script for the following:
TASK
This task will be a 15-20 minute interactive oral (IO) assessment around a scenario. It will be a one-on-one discussion between the student and the assessor/Subject Coordinator. An overview of the scenario can be found below.
It is not a question and answer test, but rather an exchange which draws upon your understanding, and creates a setting in which you can demonstrate your knowledge of the subject and apply course concepts.
Scenario
The interactive oral assessment will take the form of a scenario and roleplay. In this scenario, the student has been asked by your employer to brief a Member of Parliament (MP) on a criminal justice policy issue which includes a consideration of gender on behalf of your organisation. The MP is part of a parliamentary working party considering changes to policy/legislation and/or related law reform and is looking for advice concerning one of a list of four issues. The four issues are listed below. On the day, students will be given one of these issues by the marker which will form the basis for their interactive oral scenario:
The Federal Government, specifically the Sex Discrimination Commissioner has concerns regarding ongoing sexual harassment in Australian workplaces. Advice is sought about the effectiveness of the current complaint mechanisms at both NSW and Federal levels and outcomes of current practice.
The state government, and specifically the NSW Attorney Generals office is reviewing how it can support victims of crime. From July 2024 coercive control will be a criminal offence in NSW. Advice is sought about key issues and what types of support services may be appropriate.
The state government, and specifically the NSW Attorney Generals office is concerned about the trafficking of women for illegal sex trade work into Australia, but concerned about clear messaging around this issue to maintain support for the legal sex work industry. Advice is sought about navigating this area.
The NSW state government, and specifically the Minister for Women is reviewing the 2019 legislative changes on abortion laws. Advice is sought about the effectiveness of the new laws and policies that should be developed or amended to support the legislation.
Roles of the examiner and student:
Examiner: The examiner will take on the role of a member of parliament who has been tasked with convening a working party considering one of the criminal justice issues listed. In this scenario, the MP is not a criminal justice expert, but has experience working in policy development and law reform. As a starting point for the working party, the MP has invited stakeholders from the criminal justice system, including both Government and Non-Government organisations, to brief her/him on the issues and to gain a better understanding of what the working party terms of reference should be.
Student: In this scenario, the student should give some thought to the type of role they might wish to pursue as a graduate, and then has some flexibility in choosing what their professional role and type of organisation may be. Explaining this to the examiner will form part of the interactive oral.
Briefing information for student role:
Student: You are scheduled to meet with the MP to discuss one of the scenarios presented above. You are an expert in the chosen topic area and are expected to guide the MP on developing aspects of the terms of reference to investigate the criminal justice area. You are expected to make a strong case supporting your point of view, based on theory and evidence. Prepare yourself to address any contrary arguments that are likely to be presented by other stakeholders advising the MP.
Introduce yourself to the MP, and your area of expertise and the stakeholder group you are representing. Comment on what you would like to see as an outcome for your stakeholder group and why. Address any contrary arguments that are likely to be presented by other stakeholders advising the MP. You could show willingness to make reasonable compromise based on logical argument, similarly you can reject alternative suggestions based on strong argument.
