Issue date 08/02/24 (MS Teams)

Hand in deadline 21/03/24 (MS Teams)

Vocational Scenario or Context You have managed to secure a technical apprenticeship with a regional contractor.

Your old school have heard of your success and have invited you back to talk to the year 10 students about careers in construction. The brief is quite wide ranging and they have indicated you have 30 minutes available to you. They have also stated they would like some supporting documentation to hand out to their students. The only stipulation is that your talk focuses on either a famous national project or a local project that the students can relate to.

You have discussed this with your supervisor at work and they have agreed to give you the time to undertake this task as they feel it is advantageous to them and the school. During your discussion, your supervisor suggested you draw up a list of 3 famous and 3 local projects that you could possibly use to provide an overview of the whole of the construction industry, from inception to, design and construction concluding in the end use and the impact of the project on the area it is situated. Once you have selected your projects you will have another meeting with your supervisor to agree the best one to use.

A suitable project would include sports stadia, shopping centres, schools, hospitals. It needs to be something relatively recent and something you can obtain a lot of information on. You will be required to undertake extensive research on all aspects of the design, construction and use of the building.

Task 1 Once you have agreed a suitable project with your tutor you are required to produce and present a 10-minute presentation with supporting hand-outs. Your presentation will address the design phase of the project you have selected. During the presentation you should consider:

Local aesthetics (vernacular)

Functional requirements

Design opportunities

Design solutions

Success of the design

Reactions to the completed scheme

To support your presentation, you are required to produce presentation notes to cover the oral aspects of your presentation and a booklet/guide to the project. You should consider all aspects covered in your presentation, but it is not intended to be a copy of your presentation slides. The booklet should be illustrative and include a lot of annotated pictures of the project, both before, during and after (in use).

The format for both the presentation and the booklet is your choice. Remember your target audience and think how you can get your message across to them.

Checklist of evidence required To successfully undertake this assignment, you will have produced and presented a 10-minute presentation on the design and functionality of the project you have selected. Your presentation will consider the relevant aspects of the local area, the design and whether it has worked now that it is built.

This will be supported by an illustrated guide to the design options, opportunities and choices. You will consider the final design and discuss whether this worked as originally intended. You should also use images of other buildings in the area to illustrate the choices made by the designer.

Criteria covered by this task:

Unit/Criteria reference To achieve the criteria, you must show that you are able to:

17/A.P1 Explain how the design of the project meets functional requirements.

17/A.P2 Explain how the design of the project meets aesthetic requirements.

requirements of the project.

17/A.D1 Evaluate the design choices made in meeting the functional and aesthetic requirements of the project and the needs of stakeholders.

Task 2 Prepare and present a 10-minute presentation with supporting documentation on the methods of construction and materials used for your project. Your presentation should consider:

Different options available for construction

Methods and techniques used

Different options for the material selection

Material choice

Why the developer and contractor chose the methods, techniques and materials they did

Appropriateness of the choices made for the type of building and local area

You should consider whether the final solutions chosen are fit for use and purpose.

To support your presentation, you are required to produce a booklet/guide to the project.
