Assessment 1 - Critical reflection key information

Assessment type: Written assignment

Weight: 40% of final grade

Length: 1500 words

Aim: Focusing on non-standard forms of work, the aim of this task is to provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their understanding of organisations obligations to workers, their own personal (or others) experiences with this non-standard form of work and their position on the future of this form of work for example, will it become more standard than non-standard; and what are the future implications for workers and employers.

Task: Students need to complete a 1500-word reflective journal.

It is suggested that students follow the format below when preparing their reflective journal.

Choose only ONE non-standard form of work either casual, labour hire, fixed term contractors, and independent contractors. If you are unsure about your choice, please check with your tutor before proceeding.

Investigate which organisations and/or industries in Australia regularly employ people using this form of work. For example, casual employment is very common in the hospitality industry, and platform workers are often independent contractors.

Research why organisations use this form of work as an option for employment, and what are their obligations (if any) to employees who are employed in this form of work (use Australian context only). In your research, look for legal and social responsibilities of organisations/employers.

Based on this information, think about your position, or personal opinion, on this form of employment in Australia.

Note the extent to which you agree or disagree with organisations employing people using this form of work and give examples based on yours (and others) experiences, news articles, research, legal rulings, etc. Ask your tutor if you are unsure about sources.

Based on your evaluation, finish with a statement or two about whether you think this form of employment has a place in the future of work and why.

In terms of structure, please follow the guide below.
