Project selection

Students are to study a medium/large construction project with focus on the structural system, members, and connections. You may select a project from the case study folders in vUWS, or if you are employed at a contractor, you may like to report on the project that you are working on. If you are choosing your own project, it must be:

  • A low-rise steel-framed industrial/warehouse/light commercial building where the structural system is a steel portal frame, or
  • Multi-storey building consisting of a conventional RC/pre stressed concrete frame, structural steel frame, mass timber structure or a hybrid/composite structure, or
  • Other structure as approved by Subject Coordinator.

Typical domestic construction is not acceptable.

Progress Report 5%

Students are to submit a brief overview (approx. 4 pages - 600 words plus images) of their chosen structure with focus on Sections 1-2 from the final report. It should include:

  • Location and basic information of the structure selected
  • Types of structural components used with some specific examples
  • At least 10 images of the structure and members
  • Plan for completion of the report. Including expected completion dates

Progress report will be assessed in vUWS as a mark out of 5. Project information and photos will account for 3 marks, the completion plan will receive a mark out of 2.

Note that the work submitted in the progress report will form the initial part of your final report. Any discussion written in your progress report may be used in your own final report without any concern for selfplagiarism.

Final Report (35%)

The final report submission should be approximately 2000 words. Tables, references, appendices, and captions are all excluded from the word count. The document structure in the report template will guide you on how to successfully write the report. A detailed rubric is given in the table below.

Report requirements

Building Superstructure is listed in the recommended program sequence for students to take in their 6th university semester, so a professional report standard is expected. It will be marked appropriate to this expectation.

All tables and figures must be captioned, and the source of the table/figure must be included. Any table or figure not captioned with the source will be excluded when marking. See report template page 1 for more info.

The file format is .docx preferred or .pdf format accepted if your Word file size increases beyond 10mb.

Do not attach any large drawings or any other large files as appendices to the report. The report document should be A4 size throughout.

Students studying one of the case studies need only take screenshots of the documentation and the VR site tour. If you are studying your own self-sourced project, you will need to submit drawings and any other referenced files can through the separate submission link provided in the report folder in vUWS.

  • Anything sourced from the case study folders doesn’t need to be uploaded as supporting docs. Just take screenshots and caption your images appropriately
  • Anything obtained from a publicly accessible web link on the internet needs suitable Harvard WSU citation
  • Any other documentation from a self-sourced project that is used for supporting your discussion but not publicly accessible (e.g. drawings, briefs), needs to be submitted to the supporting documentation link

You are required to provide in-text references to support discussions using Harvard WesternSydneyU referencing style. Make sure that you provide a full reference list at the end of the report.

The report will be submitted through Turnitin. You should aim to submit early, view the originality report, and are encouraged to edit and resubmit before the due date.
