PetFriendIndustry Sector: Retail Pet Food & Pet Products
eCommerce Focus: B2C sales, B2C eMarketing & eLoyalty
Background and Covid
PetFriend Company is a small company that was commenced in 2013 by former VU graduates. The company imports Pet Food from around the globe and then sells the products at their retail stores. The recent covid pandemic increased pet ownership and resulted in a boost in sales. Petfriend has its head office located in the suburb of Melton in Melbourne, along with its storage and distribution centre.
In 2013 PetFriend opened a small Pet Food shop on the ground floor of its head office for the local community as there was a gap in the Melton area. The Pet Food shop was successful and followed up with a series of PetBarn shops in the several Melbourne strip shopping sites.

In 2020 covid impacted the operations in several ways. Job keeper was not available to support the casual staff and they were let go. Sales in all PetBarn items increased due to the increase in pets purchased but lockdowns limited the ability to reach the loyal customer base. There was pressure in that casual staff numbers decreased but customer interest was peaking. There is one manager and four sales staff at each site.
Spots Pet Food Expansion
In the last year PetFriend also took-over a local major producer of Diet Pet Food.

PetFriend has two product ranges, Pet Food including Dry, Wet, Snacks and Diet food and the sales of associated Pet products. The retail outlets are predicted to blossom further in 2023 and beyond but given the growing popularity of the Pet lifestyle competition could be a problem and margins are tight. PetFriend has an information system for the supplier orders. In early 2021 Barry moved quickly to the web hosting platform GoDaddy to gain an online presence. Whilst orders were taken by phone Barry wanted a fully functioning website that would replace the GoDaddy site and sell, market and help in the eLoyalty of the customers.
The management staff at PetFriend recognize that in all sections of the business they have a loyal base of customers. With the increase in competition in the industry, they also recognize the need to modernize their computer systems to help manage the customer base and prevent customer loss. Additionally, the sales representatives need more support in dealing with their high value customers, to help them attract new customers.
Your consulting company has been approached by PetFriend for advice on how to tackle these problems. You have been asked by your supervisor to prepare a scoping report highlighting the issues and a possible eCommerce solution in developing a broad strategy. Your advice needs to be well researched and not based on your own personal views or experiences. It should be ready for implementation in the first half of 2023.
