Assignment Task

BIA130: Testing Techniques and Methodologies

Task:
Create a visual interpretation of Tadao Ando's "Church of the Light" through an exploration of a range of hand drawing and modeling techniques.

Preparation
Choose 3 representations of interior/built environments that you admire from 3 different designers, artists or illustrators. Think about what you like about them. Identify the key techniques within the drawings and begin to test these in your studio explorations (to begin with you might like to try and recreate the original images to understand the techniques). As you are testing these new mediums think of how they could be used to translate some of the qualities of Ando’s Church.

Be prepared at the first Collaborate session with the following:

- 3 x images of 3 x artist’s work (1 x per designer/artist/illustrator)

- A list of techniques used by that artist

- The materials and mediums needed to replicate those techniques

In the week following the first Collaborate session, you will undertake testing to try and replicate the techniques of the chosen artists. You will need to upload your progress to Collaborate for comment.

It is strongly recommended that you confirm your artist choice with your tutor prior to proceeding with Parts A+B of the assessment.

Part A
Following your initial explorations in different mediums, and discussions with your tutors and colleagues, choose one artist to continue to use as your influence as you create visual representations of the Church of the Light. Research the Church and its qualities, and gain an understanding of Ando’s ideas behind the project - use this to guide your visual language along with your influencing artist. During Collaborate sessions in week’s 2+3, we will have a series of feedback sessions on your work in progress to help develop your project. You will need to work independently between sessions to test and re-test the techniques of your artist.

You will create 2xA3 drawings:
- one must be either a plan or a section (must be to either 1:50 or 1:100 scale)
- the other must be a 3D representation of the space (interior perspective)

The choice of mediums is up to you but your aim is to create visual representations that communicate the qualities and ideas of the project. The 2 drawings must read as a set (i.e. be cohesive in their aesthetic.) Ultimately your approach will be guided by the work of your inspiration artist – there should be an obvious relationship between your finished drawings and their work (though it may only be one piece of their work, rather than their entire collection.) The drawings should express the qualities of the interior and should illustrate human occupation.

Part B

Create a scale model that communicates the spatial qualities of the project. This may be a full model or a sectional model. Materials are your own choice but should read appropriately with your drawing package (discuss suitable materials with your tutor.) The scale is determined by you (discuss your choice with your tutor.) Ensure your model demonstrates your craftsmanship. You will also need to find a way to visually link your model to your drawings. This can be reasonably subtle but requires careful consideration. Again, discussing this approach with your tutor is important.

Format
You are to submit a single pdf document containing:

- Cover page: Through a short body of text (max 200 words) you will convey your approach, techniques and why you have chosen to visually illustrate the building in this way. Make sure you include the original artist’s work for reference on the cover page (appropriately referenced)

- Process work: 1 x A3 page of selected process work to communicate how you tested various techniques to create your outcome

- Part A: 2 x A3 pages of drawings

- Part B: 1 x 1:100 scale model communicated over 2 x A3 pages. You will need to extensively photograph your model overall and with detail shots to demonstrate the overall essence of the model and craftsmanship
