Case Study: Ethical Principles and Conflicts of Interests

The members of a value analysis committee (VAC) at Memorial Hospital include nurses, advanced practice nurses, physicians, purchasing agents, hospital board members, and some other staff. The VAC is charged with reviewing large purchasing decisions. A sales representative for a new medical technology company schedules a meeting with the VAC, hoping to persuade the group about a new piece of equipment she believes will benefit Memorial Hospital. As the sales representative conducts her product pitch, the VAC learns that the new, costly equipment would only benefit a small percentage of Memorial Hospitals patient population, but its effects would be life-changing for those individuals. Although not sharing this information, one of the VAC team members knows that the mother of the hospital CEO would be one of the patients who would benefit from this purchase. The sales representative gives a brief overview on the history of her company and something about the company nags at another VAC member; he suddenly realizes that he owns stock or financial shares in the parent company.
