Case Study Template Overall 1,000 (+/-10%) word count

Cover page (not in word count)

Introduction (approximately 100 words, one paragraph)

The introduction should be brief and provide the reader with an overview of the case study analysis. In doing so, the introduction should only include:

the aim of the submission

the objective of the submission

the key themes to be addressed in the submission.

There is no need to include in-text references because you will not be introducing research/using data/statistics. You will merely be giving the reader insight into what you will be writing in your paper. Refer to the assessment questions to determine what the aim, objective and key themes of your assignment are.

PLEASE NOTE: In-text citations are not included in the word count

Question 1 (approximately 200 words)

The discussion should be thoroughly supported by evidence of research. Almost every sentence will be supported by an in-text citation. Please ensure that you adhere to the Chicago author date referencing principles as described in the Assessment 2 Milestone padlet.

1.Examine the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and describe the overall purpose for these goals. (approximately 200 words)

TIP: consider reflecting your answer to this question in two paragraphs. Each paragraph should be approximately 100 words long or four to five sentences. This is just an approximation/rough estimate and is not prescriptive.

Suggestion on how to structure your response:

Para 1: Explain what the UN SDGs are and provide an overview of some of the key themes that these goals address. You may want to discuss the underpinning principles which drive these goals. In doing so, you may want to consider conducting research on the four areas of sustainability: human, social, economic and environmental sustainability. You could also mention some of the targets associated with the goals to provide depth and strength to your answer. Remember to ensure that you in-text reference the discussion.

Para 2: Describe why the goals were created. You may want to provide data and statistics to support your discussion. In doing so, you could use data and statistics from your research to provide the justification for the creation of the goals. For example, you could mention that, based on the World Health Organisation (2023, para 1) around 735 million people (are) currently facing hunger, compared to 613 million in 2019. Goal 2: Zero Hunger (United Nations n.d.) was created to address the global food crisis (Our World in Data 2023).

Question 2 (approximately 400 words)

The discussion should be thoroughly supported by evidence of research. Almost every sentence will be supported by an in-text citation. Please ensure that you adhere to the Chicago author date referencing principles as described in the Assessment 2 Milestone padlet.

2.Choose one specific UN SDG and explain how businesses can use it to guide their operations?

TIP: consider reflecting your answer to this question in two paragraphs. Each paragraph should be approximately 200 words long or four to five sentences. This is just an approximation/rough estimate and is not prescriptive. You are marked on your ability to demonstrate effective academic writing, research and referencing skills.

Watch the following video for insight into the UN SDGs and the role it plays in the private sector: https://youtu.be/Swy0boCxEgYSuggestion on how to structure your response:

Para 1: Clearly specify your chosen UN SDG and explain what this goal is aimed at achieving (why is there a need for this goal? What is the current global state of the world that calls for this goal? What data/statistics can you use to support the justification for this goal?). Elaborate further on the goal by referring to the specific targets associated with the goal.

Para 2: Provide examples of how your chosen goal and the associated targets can be used as guidelines for businesses to operate in a more sustainable manner. Perhaps your chosen goal will provide guidelines on how businesses can practice respecting human rights through better human resource policies or practices? Perhaps your chosen goal can offer businesses ideas on how to improve business efficiencies through reducing waste?

Question 3 (approximately 200 words)

3.Select a specific company or industry from your home country. Provide examples of how the company or industry has successfully leveraged sustainable practices into their operations by adopting corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

TIP: consider reflecting your answer to this question in two paragraphs.

In responding to this assessment question, you may want to consider conducting research on the following areas:

Para 1: Explicitly mention where your home country is and provide a brief background of your chosen company - how long it has been established for, how big it is, what industry/business sector it belongs to. This discussion does not have to be too long. A brief background will suffice to provide the reader with some context.

Para 2: Identify which UN SDG the company has adopted in designing their CSR initiatives. Provide some insight into the companys sustainable business practices, demonstrating its relationship to one of the UN SDGs. You may want to conduct research on your chosen company or industry by searching on the CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives of your chosen company or industry. For example, based on the West Australian (2023), there is an increasing number of hotels in Australia which are adopting more sustainable business practices. Accor Hotels in Australia is an example of one such company as they are launching their Ecotourism Australias Sustainable Tourism Certification program in 2023 (The West Australian 2023).

Conclusion (approximately 100 words)

The conclusion will wrap up/summarise all of the key themes you have addressed in the analysis. As such, you will not include any new information in the conclusion and there is therefore no need for you to reference because you are summing up the key themes you have addressed in your submission. These are your thoughts of what is important in your submission and should be written in an academic manner. Please refer to the Assessment 2 Milestone padlet on Academic Writing.

Reference list (not in word count)

Please use a minimum of 3 credible sources and refer to the Assessment 2 Milestone padlet on completing a reference list. You can use the articles provided in the assessment brief and it is counted as a source. However, you are advised to conduct wider research beyond the articles provided. In doing so, the sources should not be more than 15 years old. There are no limitations on the number of references you can use.
