1. Thirteen-year-old schoolboy, Carter, has been newly diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and is not wanting to take his medications as they make him feel unwell. He has the involvement of two major joints (knees) and has presented to the hospital outpatients department for further management of pain and a management plan. Carter was diagnosed with high functioning autism 5 years ago and has required additional learning and social supports at school allowing him to achieve appropriate academic standards.

2. Zak is a 42-year-old who has presented to the ED with a recurring migraine via ambulance. He has a known history of alcohol and drug dependency and is well known to ED staff. He has a long history of cocaine use and has recently been diagnosed with early-onset dementia thought to be related to his long-term illicit drug use. Zak is currently living in a halfway house after recent incarceration for theft and is having difficulty navigating the effects of his early-onset dementia and its medication regimen.

Mrs Soo Lok Lim is a 72-year-old lady from China living in regional Queensland who has been diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and is having treatment in a town 100kms from her home on a weekly basis. She is quite isolated and alone since her husband died 4 years ago. Soo has been in Australia for 46 years but never learnt to speak English well as she relied on her husband and adult children for shopping and everyday activities. Soos children have had to move away for employment opportunities but are supportive. She has a history of moderate hypertension which is currently controlled with medication.

Assessment name: Critical essay

Task description: Undertaking a holistic analysis, you will complete the online modules within the NSB334 unit that highlight critical thinking and decision making in diverse and complex healthcare situations.

Before writing this assessment, it is important that you review the online modules and complete the self-directed learning activities within the NSB334 unit. The online workshops will help students to consolidate the online module material and self-directed activities.

What you need to do: Choose ONE case study from the group of cases on the Canvas site under Assessment 2 and write a critical essay addressing the following points in relation to your chosen case study.

Identify the comorbidities and related actual and potential disabilities associated for the person in the case study.

Describe the determinants of health that may influence health outcomes for the person in the case study.

Critically discuss how the comorbidities and their health determinants introduce a risk of deterioration in their overall health and well-being.

Discuss and justify three (3) secondary and/or tertiary health promotion strategies and supports for the patients self-care management.

Length: 2000 words +/-10% (word length includes in-text referencing and excludes your reference list and appendices)

Estimated time to complete task: Approximately 20 hours

Weighting: Satisfactory (>=50%) or Unsatisfactory (<50%).
