Case study 1: Toby

Toby is a 33-year-old man with AOD issues. While intoxicated, the drugs he uses affect his entire body: from blood pressure to heart rate. Toby uses cocaine to ‘amp’ up his body, increasing his blood pressure, metabolism and reducing his ability to sleep. Toby also drinks alcohol excessively, which causes him to fluctuate between aggression and depression. Toby’s marriage broke up last year and he has little contact with his two young children. He is unemployed. Toby has been becoming increasingly confused, more tolerant of the substances he is addicted to and he has recently had recurring thoughts of ending his life. He has attended your service, a community health service specializing in AOD support and treatment, voluntarily after a violent outburst meant he spent the night in the local police cells.

Case study 2: Charlotte

Charlotte is a 40-year-old aboriginal person living in metropolitan Melbourne. Charlotte has recently been made homeless and for the last two weeks has been sleeping rough.

She has been referred to your residential service by both a community based AOD service and doctors at the emergency department of the local hospital following an overdose.

Charlotte uses a number of substances alongside very heavy drinking. Her main drug of choice is ice but she will also regularly use crack and heroine. Often this is mixed with long drinking sessions. When Charlotte is intoxicated, she becomes increasingly reckless. She has been arrested and detained seven times because of this behaviour. This includes things such as walking towards traffic on the freeway, jumping from a moving train and driving at excessive speeds.

There have also been two failed suicide attempts that have resulted in hospitalisation. As Charlotte gets older, the divide between reckless behaviour and suicide attempts becomes less clear. She has no contact with her family and no children of her own.
