Childhood Educational Program Report Writing
You work in a regulated early learning service, in an urban suburb, catering to children from a range of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The service has four rooms: babies – birth to 18 months toddlers – 18 months to 3 years pre-kinder – 3 to 4 years pre-school/ kindy – 4 to 6 years Indoor spaces are neat, colorful, clean, and well organized. They offer stimulating activity/ learning areas, a quiet area, spaces for children to participate in individual or group activities, and rest/ sleeping areas for children of different ages. There is a separate, clean, and hygienic meals area and the furniture in the service is ergonomically appropriate for the children. Suitable toileting facilities are clean and well-maintained. The service has an outdoor area with a sandpit, timber cubby houses, play equipment, a lawn area, and a separate reflective garden space. Educators are expected to regularly observe children using appropriate observation techniques and to record their observations. They are also expected to collaborate with parents, family members and, where appropriate, other stakeholders including community members. Educators use observations to help them plan activities and learning programs that address the development of: fine and gross motor skills emotional regulation cognitive abilities social and pro-social skills communication and interpersonal skills Observations are documented, photographed, or videoed and then used to assess the children’s progress. They are shared with parents or carers/ guardians. Your supervisor has asked you to conduct observations of three children in the service: a one-year-old, a three-year-old, and a five-year-old. You are expected to use three different observation techniques for each child. The observations will inform reports to parents regarding their child’s progress and can contribute to the development of learning programs. Write a detailed paper explaining why the observations would be necessary, how the information would be recorded and used and how it would inform your reflective practice. Nominate and briefly describe three techniques you could use for each child. In the paper briefly explain each of the following: who you would consult to help you determine the best observation methods why it would be appropriate to use these techniques how you would document the observations secondary sources you might use to gather information about the child what service standards, policies and procedures you would need to comply with why it is necessary to create wholistic profiles of the children how this information would be used to inform educational programs and practices why it is important to regularly conduct observations how observations link to approved learning frameworks other forms of information that might be used to inform educational programs and practices how they contribute to collaborative partnerships with families and communities, and to the building or positive relationships with children.
