. J.S. Bach and George Frederick Handel were two of the most significant
composers of the Baroque era. Compare their compositional styles and
contributions from a variety of angles, including aspects such as genre,
compositional approaches, and social context.1. How did the religious upheaval during the 1500s in Europe (particularly the
Reformation and Counter-Reformation) contribute to the emergence of the
early Baroque era in music? Examine four works that reflect these artistic
shifts.
2. The Italian and French opera developed during the Baroque as two
significantly different art forms. Compare the stylistic differences of Baroque
opera in Italy and France. In your discussion draw on two operas from EACH
nation (four in total).
3. The Baroque era saw the rise of instrumental music. Discuss the
development of two contrasting instrument-only genres (not vocal) that
emerged during the Baroque era. Use at least two examples from each
genre category (four in total). NB: A genre is defined here as a type of
composition such as a Sonata, Concerto, Dance Suite, Fugue, etc, not a style
