CKY Parsing Project Requirements

  1. For the domain area of application, first generate a list of sentences in English (20-25 sentences are required for group projects or 15-20 sentences if your project is an individual project) related to the domain area of choice. For this purpose, give one paragraph description of the domain in English in addition to those sentences.
  2. Perform logical design of the parser
    1. Build a Context Free Grammar (CFG) to generate those sentences (rules) listed in step 1 above with moderate number of words on the right-hand side of each rule (the average number of words on the right-hand side of the sentences/rules are 4-8).
    2. Convert the CFG into another equivalent CFG in CNF.
    3. For each sentence (rule), manually build (draw) a CKY table using a tool (not hand-drawn) to parse each sentence. Include 3 (5 if group projects) invalid sentences in addition to the 15-20 (20-25 if group project) sentences in building all the CKY tables. For example, if you have 15 sentences, then you will need to build 15 CKY tables to parse the sentences. In addition, you will need to build another 3 CKY tables for 3 invalid sentences. Each table should be computer-drawn, not hand-drawn.
  3. Perform physical design of the parser
    1. Select the right tool (i.el any computer language of your
    2. Write the parser code to implement the parsing A. Input to the parser: a sentence (rule) at a time B. Output from the parser: choice) Yes (to indicate the sentence is accepted and valid) No (to indicate the sentence is not accepted and invalid)
    3. Repeat steps A and B for all sentences (rules) Document the work.
  4. Document the work.
    1. Title of the project (including course number, semester, student contact information)
    2. Purposes/description
    3.  List of all valid and invalid sentences generated in English
    4. One CFG for all the sentences in step C
    5. Another equivalent CFG converted into CNF
    6. CKY tables for all the sentences including valid and invalid sentences
    7. Soft copy of the parser code
    8. Copy of execution snapshot for parsing of each sentence
  5. Presentation and demo
    1. Perform a demo of parser execution for each sentence and record it
    2. Prepare a YouTube or similar platform video for the demo, and create the link to it
  6. Deliverables (what to turn in for fulfillment of project requirements)
    1. All documents from step 4
    2. The link to the video from step 5
    3. Put both (a) and (b) in the final project requirement drop box by due date

Guidelines for the Project

  • The project may be either individual project or team project with 2-3 people in the team.
  • The domain area for the grammar is the area of directory assistance for US national parks or world tourist sites.
  • Examples of sentences (rules) are:
    • Can you recommend me a national park in California?
    • What are national parks in India?
    • Can you recommend me a good park to visit in Italy?
    • Can you suggest some parks to visit in Texas?
    • What are famous rivers in Brazil?
    • What are high mountains in India and Nepal?
    • The tallest mountain in Japan is Fuji Mountain.
    • The longest river in the world is Amazon River.
    • The longest river in Egypt is Nile River.
