Introductory information:

The Nursing Code of Conduct (Principle 3) states “understanding and acknowledging historic factors such as colonisation and its impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health helps inform care” (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2022).

Colonisation has had a significant impact on social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, incorporating important cultural connections. SEWB is defined as a multidimensional concept that includes mental health, but also encompasses domains of health and wellbeing such as connection to Land/Country, culture, spirituality, ancestry, family, and community (Gee et al, 2014).

This is represented in the diagram below (Gee et al, 2014).

Essay question:

In your essay, discuss how the colonisation of Australia has impacted the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In this discussion, explore the impact on three (3) connections identified in the inner circle of the above diagram. Also include in your essay a brief discussion of how this knowledge of the impact of colonisation on SEWB should inform the role of the Registered Nurse (RN) when working with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples.

 The body of essay will:

  • Discuss the three (3) cultural connections you have identified from the SEWB model in the inner circle, and how they have been impacted by colonisation, supported by literature. For example: “Connection to physical wellbeing” “Connection to culture” etc (1-2 paragraphs per connection).

  • You should include relevant and recent sources (>10 articles).

The conclusion will:

  • Summarise your paper and the main points of essay.
  • Do not include new information in this section, this is the last opportunity to summarise for the reader that you have understood the essay requirements.
