Task Description

Waccovia

Waccovia is a country whose government has embraced a free market, non-interventionist approach championed by its President, Ronald Mump. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a range of problems in the economy.

There has been an increase in income inequality, some people are being paid very low wages which are insufficient for them to buy the necessities of life. Other people are being paid vast amounts of money. As a result, some of the poor people cannot afford to go to the doctors when they are ill, they cannot afford to buy medicine or vaccinate their children. They also cannot afford to send their children to school. As health care and education is now privately run, only the rich have a good standard of health care and education.

Many other goods have become very cheap, cigarettes and alcohol have become cheap and consumption of them has risen. This has had negative effects in Waccovia, with increasing public drunkeness, fighting and rising alcoholism. There are also concerns about rising rates of lung cancer from the increase in smoking.

There is also a growing congestion problem on the roads, the price of petrol has fallen and car registration no longer exists so more people are driving. Unfortunately, the roads are in a state of disrepair, hit and run accidents are very common as many people no longer have compulsory insurance and the private towing companies will not tow cars without insurance so there are many burnt out and smashed cars on the roads. This is not helped by the lack of public transport.

Finally, there is a growing pollution crisis, there are no longer any limits on pollution emitted by large factories and electricity producers and air quality has significantly declined.

Task

Using the stimulus above, you are to write a report recommending to Ronald Mump, some changes he needs to introduce to the economy of Waccovia. Your report must include the following sections:

1. What is market failure? Using the stimulus, outline 3 examples of market failure.

2. Describe the need for government intervention.

3. Make a detailed suggestion for a government intervention to solve one of these problems.

4. Explain how your suggestion will help to solve the chosen problem.

You must include a detailed Harvard Bibliography.

You will be assessed on how well you:

Demonstrate understanding of market failure

Provide characteristics and features of government intervention

Make a valid and well thought out suggestion for government intervention

Provide how your suggestion will solve the chosen problem

Engage in relevant economic and commercial research and write a Harvard Bibliography

Submission Instructions:

Format word-processed, double spaced, size 12 font, Times New Roman or Arial, 700 to 1000 words.
