CommunityDevelopmentTheoryandPractice

WelcometoCommunityDevelopmentTheoryandPractice.Manyofyouarenewtothestudyofcommunitydevelopment and it is likely that you will ask the question: what is it? This is an excellent question and the key starting point for this unit. Whenweaskthequestionwhatiscommunitydevelopment?weexpectthat:1)thereisa straightforward answer,2)there isoneanswer,and3)wemustgettheanswertothesetwoquestionsrightandquickly.

Communitydevelopmentcannotbeexplainedsoeasily.Therearelotsofdifferentwaysofapproachingthequestionof whatcommunitydevelopmentis.Thankfully,therearemanythinkersand practitionerswhohavereflectedonthisquestion andtheirexperiencesandthinkinghelpustotrytounderstandwhatcommunitydevelopmentis.

Inourviewagoodcommunityworkerhasmorethanoneanswertothequestionofwhatcommunitydevelopmentis. This allows them tomoveacrossdifferentplaces, achievedifferent thingsand thinkcreatively. So,what we willdoin the unit is learnaboutavarietyofwaysofapproachingcommunitydevelopmentwork.Webelievethatcommunitydevelopment involvesa great deal of emphasis on the art of listening to multiple voices. While it isuseful to have lotsof ideasand lots of wisdom, the art of good community development involves seeking an array of perspectives and trying to add to our knowledgerepertoireratherthanfixonasingletruth.

Approachtolearning

Learningapproachunderpinningunit

The unit will use a combination of lectures/discussions and tutorials for internal students and recorded lectures, online discussions, and self-directed learning activities for on-line external students. Like other community development units, we invite you to observe examples of community development (through online, digital video and written examples of current policy), and to read what others have said about community development. We invite you to draw out learning, ideas and concepts through discussion, reflection and observation.

We take this approach in community development because we believe that people are more likely to learn when: we start by observing the practice of others, reflect on what we see happening, compare this with what others do, notice how we feel about this, and read what experienced practitioners and thinkers have to say.

Thisapproachwillhelpyoumovetowardswhatwewillcallreflectivepractice.

Reflective practice is a core part of the repertoire of community work. It involves you, the practitioner, witnessing or standing back and looking at and thinking about your own experience of the work you are doing. The point of reflection is to take a closer look at what is happening to both you and others, to direct attention to what goes on around you and to explore the work in greater depth. The key to reflective practice is to learn from what you are doing, by examining and learning from your experience rather than just being in it.

To achieve this learning, we will encourage and facilitate you through methods which help you make links between important thinkers, core ideas and examples of practice in community development. Central to this is a structured approach and connectivity between lectures, tutorials and assessment. To assist you with this we will work with you to achieve the following:

  • Toassistyoutakeonthemantleofindependentlearners,whereyouaretheleadinthedevelopmentofyourown learning

  • Toworkwithotherstudentsandyourtutorsintutorialsthroughgroupactivitiestosupportyourownandthelearning ofothers
