Unit Learning Outcomes

LO1 Discuss the stages of a design process and the types of information required to communicate, share and manage the project process.

LO2 Explain the different types of construction information developed through the course of a project.

LO3 Produce design propositions that address project requirements defined through feasibility stages.

LO4 Present a construction information package, highlighting the coordination of information between different project stakeholders to ensure accuracy.

Assignment Brief and Guidance

You have recently gained employment as a trainee engineer for a large private general construction & building firm. The firm specialises in residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects. As part of the companys drive to reduce operational costs and meet net zero targets for its clients, current demand for energy efficient processes and construction design solutions has never been more important, therefore they are seeking to improve the way they are able to support greater energy efficient construction solutions. While they have identified a range of different ways to address environment/sustainability, they are of the opinion that they may achieve the greatest impact in need for energy efficient construction solutions.

You have been assigned to a construction site to review a recently completed residential building selected and develop an energy efficient solution that will enable energy efficiency of the building. During this process, you should consider the different stages of a design process, types of construction information, design propositions that address project and present a construction information package for different stakeholders to ensure accuracy.

Your report should:

  • Describe the stages and activities of a construction design and explain the types of information required throughout the different stages of a project process. In addition, you need to assess the relationship between design and project stages, and the information sharing requirements. As you progress, it is required to critically evaluate the relationship between design and project stages, highlighting the processes and procedures to ensure information coordination throughout.

  • After reviewing the stages and the types of information of selected residential building, it is required to examine a brief to ascertain the requirements of a selected building and outline the relationships between drawings, schedules and specifications. In addition to this, analyse the importance of clash detection information coordination.

  • Now you are at the stage where you are required to create construction drawings and details using industry-standard tools and techniques. In addition to this produce specifications, schedules and an outline construction health & safety phase plan for a given residential building. As you progressed, you are required to prepare specification prelims and schedule of works, in coordination with construction drawings and details.

  • As your report may be shared with clients, you are required to present construction information to an audience of specialists and nonspecialists by explaining the coordination and information sharing between different roles and stakeholders. In addition to this analyse the ways in which different forms of contractual relationships between stakeholders influence flow of information. In the end, you are required to evaluate a package of construction information, in relation to their coordination and accuracy.
