TITLE
Give a short title to your essay. This can be simply the name of the LegalTech app you chose. Or, something like Critical evaluation of X, Pros and cons of X, where X is the app you chose.
Below, I recommend that you to structure your text into three sections (plus bibliography) addressing the essay topic. However, you are not obliged to follow this template: you are free to add or remove sections and/or to structure the text in a way that is logical. Alongside structuring the essay logically overall, make such that each paragraph within the main text of each section is also well structured: include an introductory sentence which signals to the reader what the paragraph is about and a concluding sentence at the end of each paragraph, which brings it back to the essay topic. In the essay, you should also try to review the learning objectives of the module and the marking criteria, to verify that you have demonstrated all the required knowledge, understanding and skills.
INTRODUCTION
In the introduction you should describe the context of the LegalTech application or topic you chose. You should focus on the need that motivated the application, i.e., the reasons why it was proposed/invented. For instance: these specific legal tasks require the following repetitive operations/checks, etc., these were done by hand and so they were very time-consuming and/or error-prone, so that they demand for automation, etc.. You could also insert (if you find them) some statistical data, i.e., the percentage of errors and/or the average cost of these operations, the average amount of the sanctions paid by the companies in case of mistakes or negligence, etc. An introduction should also sign-post the reader to whats to come. In other words, describe the overall topic and the themes/sections you will cover. E.g., In this essay I will discuss the challenges and opportunities of application/use case X, focusing on technical, legal and ethical challenges. The key opportunities identified are Y. The key challenges are Z.
THE LEGALTECH APPLICATION
In this section you should mainly describe the LegalTech application or topic you chose. Where and by whom is it currently being used and who might benefit from its use? In what ways does it create opportunities for better legal services or access to justice? Etc.
When you discuss benefits and opportunities, you should refer to what you wrote in the introduction as the sections of your essay must be connected of one another
CHALLENGES AND LIMITATIONS
It is very unlikely that you application solves problems without bringing new ones, there is always room for improvement and future developments. Perhaps these further developments must be made on the legislative framework rather than the application itself. This section highlights legal/regulatory/ethical challenges for the applications, either by pointing out specific cases in which the application failed to provide a fully satisfactory service or potential ones, which did not occur yet but they may in the future.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS
This section should address your personal opinions and recommendations about how to improve the LegalTech application, or your chosen topic, to address the challenges you have identified above. In this section, you should expand on the content of the final section of the formative presentation plan, in light of the feedback received: what would it take to overcome the above legal/ethical challenges? What would you recommend to those developing or using this app / topic?
REFERENCES & BIBLIOGRAPHY
Use a range of sources including primary source (e.g., case law and legislation) and secondary sources (e.g., journal articles, reports, and proposals). Make sure you reference your sources appropriately using the OSCOLA (Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities) refencing style. Please follow the School of Laws guidance here. In addition to the in-text footnotes, you have the option to include a Bibliography, i.e., a list of all the sources you used throughout the essay, in alphabetical order (although this is not compulsory under OSCOLA).
