Construction Prcocess and Assignment Selection
This session
Learning objective: to understand BPNM and how to apply it to construction and processes.
Session 1:
Mapping construction processes exercise - BPNM
Selection of assignment focus
Next session: Analysing complex and ill-defined problems
The construction process
Working in your group:
Pick a sub-element and identify all the elements within that sub-element e.g. actors, artefacts, processes.
Produce a BPNM flow chart of that construction process
Use Miro to work collaboratively
Start by mapping what you know
Review your map to see whats on there
Actions, decisions, outcomes, relationships, patterns?
Flowcharts (BPMN Business Process Model and Notation)
Processes can be simply modelled with a flowchart
Although flowcharts can get very complex very quickly
Actions only have one entry and one exit
Arrows show sequence
Actions: carried out at a point in time, carried out by one
person
Common flowchart symbols
Swim lanes
Where the process involves multiple people or groups
One column per group or person
Columns should be ordered so that people who communicate with one another are adjacent
Left->Right
IT in/for construction
IT in construction firms
IT also requires infrastructure: hardware, networks, operating systems
There are more general classes of application that construction firm might also have
Accounting systems
Sales & marketing systems
Inventory systems
Production and manufacturing systems
Logistics systems
HR systems
Purchasing systems
In some firms functional applications are being superseded by ERP
What is the role and scope for Information Systems (IS) to
improvemanagement of construction projects?
What do you need to know to manage this project?
What do these people need to know to do their job?
Generic Process Structure IT in construction
Core processes:
Business Analysis and Facilities Management
Project Definition
Evaluation
Design Management
Cost Management
