Course Project Plan Intro to Programming and Automation (19 points)

Project Overview

You will work in pairs to design and implement a project in Wokwi using the Raspberry Pi Pico and MicroPython. The project should demonstrate both programming skills and basic automation concepts. Maximum of 19 points can be acquired.

Each team will:

  1. Develop a project in Wokwi.
  2. Submit the completed project (as PowerPoint) along with link to Wokwi where project can be seen.

Rules and Guidelines

1. Team Formation

  • Students must work in pairs (2 members). Each team submits one project together.

2. Project Scope

  • The project must be created in Wokwi using Pi Pico with MicroPython.
  • It should include both programming logic and an automation application (e.g., sensor control, motor actuation, or interactive system).
  • Students must include at least the following components in their Wokwi project:
  • 2 LEDs
  • 1 Servo motor
  • 1 Breadboard
  • 1 Display screen
  • 1 Sensor (either distance or temperature)

All components should be connected and interact with each other in some meaningful way.
  • Optional additional components may include:
  • Push buttons
  • Potentiometers
  • Motion sensors
  • Logic gates
  • Any other elements available in Wokwi

3. Resources

  • Teams are free to use any online tutorials, documentation, or web-based resources.
  • Proper understanding must be demonstrated in the PowerPoint and add recorded demo. Presentation should include:
  • Problem/objective of the project
  • Demonstration of the Wokwi simulation

Assessment

Projects will be evaluated based on:

Functionality: Does it work as intended?

Creativity/complexity: Is the solution meaningful and original?

Clarity of presentation

Sample Project Ideas
These are just examples to inspire youyou are not required to choose from this list. Ensure that your project still meets the requirements outlined in the project scope (above, point 2). These examples are not perfect.

  • Traffic Light Simulation control 23 LEDs in sequence like a traffic signal.
  • Temperature-Based Fan use a temperature sensor to turn an LED or servo fan on/off.
  • Distance Alert System use an ultrasonic sensor to light LEDs or move a servo when an object is near.
  • LED Blink Patterns create different blinking sequences with 2 LEDs.
  • Simple Servo Control use a potentiometer to control the angle of a servo motor.
  • Push Button Counter count button presses and display the count on an LCD or 7-segment display.
  • Motion Detector Alert detect motion with a PIR sensor and light an LED or beep a buzzer.
  • Digital Thermometer read temperature from a sensor and display it on an OLED or LCD screen.
  • RGB LED Color Mixer adjust LED colors using potentiometers.
  • Alarm System combine a distance sensor and buzzer/LED to alert when something moves into a zone.
  • You can also combine multiple ideas.
  • Temperature-Controlled Servo & Display servo moves a fan or flap based on temperature, with reading on a screen.
  • Traffic Light with Pedestrian Button LED traffic light sequence plus button-controlled pedestrian crossing.
  • Distance + Motion Alert System trigger LED or buzzer when distance sensor detects an object and motion is detected.
