Australia
. Overview of Assessment
OBJECTIVE:
- Utilize a systematic, reflective approach to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board, Australia (NMBA) Core registration standard, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), including planning, relevant activities, and record keeping.
RATIONALE:
- Learning and development occurs throughout a nurses and/or midwifes career. CPD is an important foundation of lifelong learning and helps nurses and midwives maintain their competence to practice. CPD aims to enable nurses and midwives to maintain, improve, and broaden their professional knowledge, expertise and competence to meet their obligation to provide ethical, effective, safe and competent practice. Research on CPD shows that by engaging others in CPD planning, this results in positive learning outcomes and evidence-based changes to practice (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - Guidelines: Continuing professional developmentLinks to an external site.).
- This assessment facilitates an experiential learning of how to meet the NMBA core registration standard of CPD, a minimum of 20 hours per year for Registered Nurses (RNs).
Assessment Task
STEPS IN ASSESSMENT PROCESS:
- Initial planning of learning
- Undertake a range of differing CPD activities
- Reflection on learning
- Record keeping
NoteFor this assessment- each of these steps will be entered into the assessment template (word document) provided below. You will need to download that template, complete all details required, and submit as your assessment document by the due date and time.
DETAILS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF EACH STEP IN THIS ASSESSMENT:
- INITIAL PLANNING OF LEARNING
Research shows that CPD is more effective when it involves planning and reflection. You will get most benefit from your CPD activities by planning your learning goals and the activities to meet these goals, completing your CPD and then recording reflections on your learning.Planning your CPD is an opportunity for you to:
- review best-practice standards or evidence-based practice to enable you to evaluate and improve your level of competency, treatment plan or service delivery
- identify your limitations or deficits to improve your practice to meet current standards using evidence-based practice or best-practice standards, and
- identify how you could further develop competency or strengths in areas of particular interest or aptitude.
It is often helpful to discuss planning with your peers, mentors and/or supervisors as you may not always identify your own areas of limitation. Patient feedback may also be helpful in identifying areas where you need further continuing professional or personal development. (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - Guidelines: Continuing professional developmentLinks to an external site.).
For this assessmentyou will need to identify and plan your learning goals and activities to meet those goals by completing the CPD activities you have selected (that meet the requirement of this assessment as stipulated in step 2 below).
- UNDERTAKE A RANGE OF RELEVANT CPD ACTIVITIES
The NMBA recommends that you complete a range of CPD activities throughout the course of the registration period. This is more effective for your learning than completing CPD activities of one type, or in a short time period. The NMBA recognises that people learn in different ways. Accordingly, CPD may include formal and informal learning activities. Participation in certain professional activities can also contribute to meeting your CPD requirements. CPD activitiesmust be relevant to your area of professional practice, and have clear aims and objectives that meet your self-assessed requirements. The type of learning activities selected can be broad and varied. (You) are encouraged to consider the combined use of multimedia and multiple instruction techniques, e.g. face-to-face, simulation, interactive e-learning, self-directed learning (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - Guidelines: Continuing professional developmentLinks to an external site.).
For this assessmentyou are required to complete five (5) different Australian CPD activities that are relevant to your learning plan (that you developed in step 1).
Possible examples of activities (with amaximum of one from each category) are:
- Peer-reviewed publication
- Journal Editorial
- Professional YouTube video
- Professional Website
- Professional Association Website (eg. Asthma Australia, Breast Cancer Network Australia)
- Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) from Australia Health Organisations (eg. CPG The Royal Childrens Hospital, CPG The Royal Womens Hospital)
- Generative AI source, ensure that the content is correct by checking and referencing reliable resources (eg. Copilot, Val, CHATGPT)
- Synchronous or asynchronous presentations (eg. Lecture, conference, tutorial, guest speaker)
- Attendance or listening to recorded nursing forums (eg. Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association).
- REFLECTION
You should consciously reflect on your CPD as it relates to your practice. Research shows this will improve your learning. You can do this by writing a brief summary of your CPD activities, how these activities affected your practice and assess your progress against the goals you set for yourself. Reflection on learning can contribute to the learning goals for the coming year as part of the ongoing CPD cycle (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - Guidelines: Continuing professional developmentLinks to an external site.).
For this assessment- reflect on each of your CPD activities, and specficially address the following question, as it relates to you, in the column provided on the assignment template:
- How will you apply the insights, or further questions you may have, from each CPD activity to your studies/practice?
- RECORD KEEPING
You must keep records of your CPD activities for at least five (5) years from the date you completed the CPD. All CPD records must be available for audit or if needed by the NMBA as part of an investigation arising from a notification (complaint). To help you with your CPD recordkeeping, the NMBA has developed aself-directed CPD evidence recordLinks to an external site.that you can use for planning and recording your CPD. While it is not mandatory to use this template, your CPD records must include all the information listed in the template. All evidence should be verified, and it must demonstrate that the nurse or midwife has:
- identified and prioritised their learning needs, based on their self-reflection and evaluation of their practice against the relevant competency or professional practice standards
- developed a learning plan based on identified learning needs
- participated in effective learning activities appropriate to their learning needs, and
- reflected on the value of the learning activities or the effect that participation will have on their practice (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - Guidelines: Continuing professional developmentLinks to an external site.).
The format of the evidence is not defined by the NMBA and may take many forms. For the purposes of this assessment the NMBA template has been modified to accommodate your learning needs as a BN student. However, when you are employed as a RN, we encourage you to revisit the NMBA CPD Guidelines webpage, download the evidence template and consider using it as set out. Note that the NMBA requires to you keep evidence of CPD activities, such as certificates of attainment or attendance and notes from self-directed activities (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia - Guidelines: Continuing professional developmentLinks to an external site.)however, these are not required for this assessment.
For this assessmentyou are required to download the attached word document template below and complete each section Planning, activities, reflection and documentation for each CPD activity (5 in total).
Assessment template to use for your submission.
You must use the template provided here, by downloading it as a word doc, complete, and submit by the due date and time. Do not alter the template. Complete every cell must be completed in a way that is specific and relevant to you. Generic statements may not attract marks.
Note:
- You are to complete and record five (5) CPD activities (examples of suitable CPD activities are list above)
- Only 1 CPD per category is permitted. If you do more than one CPD AND in a final reference list.
- A maximum word count per cell guide is provided, follow that guide.
- Each CPD record must be on a new page (use the 'page break' format tool, do not just enter new lines, as only the 'page break' tool will stablise the formatting)
- All details on the first page must be entered, which includes total and each CPD word count.
Here is an exampleof how the template might be completed (note that this is not to be used, and is only provided as a demonstration of how to complete each cell. This example is only for one of the CPD activities. The template commences a new page for each of the 5 CPD activities required. Note that you are welcome to use more than 1 page for each CPD activity if required.
Assessment submission and feedback
Your assessment is to be submitted using the word document format, ie. the template provided. Note that pdf formats are not accepted by canvas. Your mark and feedback will be provided via Canvas.
Assessment Criteria
Your submission will be assessed according to the marking rubric below. You are encouraged to familaries yourself with the marking expectations by reading the rubric before you write and submit your assessment.
Penalties for late submission of an assignment
Assignments received late and without prior extension approval or special consideration will be penalised by a deduction of 10% of the total score possible per calendar day for that assessment.
For example:An assignment worth 40 marks will have 4 marks deducted per calendar day after the due date. The deductions will accrue after the due date. If that assignment is submitted 5 calendar days late, 20 marks (= 5 days x 4 marks/day) will be deducted. If the marker grades the work as 37 marks out of 40, the students result will be amended to 17 marks after 5 days. (i.e. 37 - 20 marks = 17 marks).Work submitted beyond 10 calendar days after the due date will not be marked and will receive a mark of zero.
Academic integrity
Avoiding plagiarism and maintaining academic integrity are important components of the assessment process. Please refer to the assessment policy for further information. To demonstrate your original contribution and development of assessment items, course co-ordinators or the academic integrity unit, may require you to produce drafts of work in Microsoft Word format with version numbers. If you work in a different word processing program when writing assignments (e.g. Pages), please import all draft versions to Word. Please also save versions of assignments with draft numbers. You must ensure that your work is original and your own.
Your reflections are your account of your learning and decision making and must be unique, insightful and relevant to your learning plan.
