- Key words: (3-5 words that encapsulate the issues you are exploring note how academic journal articles do this)
Gender and sexuality diversity; education policy; school policy; inclusive education; whole school approach; Australian wellbeing framework
- Introduction(approximately 5-10% of your total word count): introduce the paper and the central issue being investigated (indicate its importance or significance). Include a succinct statement about your primary source and the lens you are using to analyse it (i.e. the lens of gender, race, class, neoliberalism, social justice, etc.), and indicate your thesis statement (i.e. your main argument).
How can Australian schools create a more supportive and safer environment that fosters the wellbeing and inclusion of gender and sexually diverse students? Creating safe and supportive school environments that promotes the wellbeing and inclusion of gender and sexually diverse students in Australian schools.
In the recent years, the terms inclusion and wellbeing has become a prevalent word in several educational policies in the pursuit of recognising and embracing diversity. Despite the growing push to the wellbeing and inclusion of all students, gender and sexually diverse (GSD) students still face significant challenges within their school environment. These challenges include discrimination, bullying, physical harm, and inadequate support, all of which adversely affect their overall wellbeing and sense of inclusion.
The primary source used for this research is the article titled Inclusion is vital to student wellbeing, but more can be done to support diverse students and families by Jacqueline Ullman and Tania Ferfolja. The authors discuss the findings from the Free2beYet? research, which highlight the negative impact of school environment that lacks inclusivity for gender and sexually diverse students on their wellbeing and sense of safety. Additionally, the authors discuss the survey result that reveals 82% of participating parents sought to see gender and sexuality diverse curriculum, and the need for professional development of educators to better support GSD students.
- Literature review(approximately 30% of your total word count): A critical overview of the existing research,e. whatdo the secondary sources say about the issue you have chosen to investigate?
Drawing on social constructionist theory, our gender identity and expression are not fixed by biology but rather shaped and influenced by the social norms and expectation of the society we live in. Socially acceptable expressions of gender are shaped by various contextual factors such as family, religion, geographic location, and the media. And when you do not conform to societys constructed heterosexual matrix you are perceived as unusual.
- Description and analysisof the artefact(approximately 40% of your total word count): What does the artefact source tell us about the issue? What is clearly evident and what remains implicit? What question have you raised in relation to your artefact, and how does the academic literature help you answer it? Intertwine your findings with the current literature to build an argument.
- Implications for practice(approximately one to two paragraphs): unpack links between theory and practice. For example, what does this research mean, in concrete terms, for your future practice as an educator? In this section, ensure that you incorporate a discussion of Australian Professional Standards for Teachers Focus Areas 1.3, 2.4 and 3.3 (see Rubric below). This section may also be linked to appendices if useful.
- Conclusion(approximately 5-10% of your total word count): Reiterate what the paper has been about, return to your key research question, highlight key findings, indicate any future research that is required, and close the conversation down.
