Response part 2: analysing the ethical dilemma and options (500 words)

1. Develop a list of the variety of ways you could resolve the dilemma objectively (even considering options you might recognise as ‘wrong’).
2. Assess the ethical dilemma from the perspectives covered in this subject.
3. Law, guidelines, policies
4. Does the law provide an answer to the ethical dilemma?
5. Is there a violation of corporate or professional codes and responsibilities?
6. Ethical principles
7. Consequentialism
8. Deontology (and Kant’s categorical imperative)
   In the actions considered, are (human) rights being impacted? Are duties or responsibilities not being met? Would it be okay if everyone chose this option or acted this way? Are people being treated as ends rather than means?
9. Virtue ethics
   Are actions to resolve the dilemma centred on the principles of fair play, trust, compassion and kindness at play?

Response part 3: your evaluation of the outcome (300 words)

1. This section centres on your opinion based on your ethical analysis. Based on your analysis of the options and ethical considerations, state your viewpoint on what you believe is the best way to resolve the dilemma.
2. Be sure to elaborate in the context of two (2) theoretical approaches in ethics that have been discussed in this subject.
3. Why do you think your recommendation is the morally right one to make?

Strategies for approaching this assessment

When considering this assessment, you need to answer the above three parts.

With any series of events — particularly when the issues at large are diverse, contentious and hotly debated — you must remain impartial to the issues when you analyse them.

There will be many ethical issues involved with this assessment. However, it is of critical importance that you actively seek out the primary (i.e. the principal or most important) ethical dilemma that is involved during your analysis.

The primary way to determine the central ethical dilemma is to list all the ethical dilemmas involved. Then, determine which ethical dilemma, if resolved, solves most of the other dilemmas. You may observe that many of these other dilemmas disappear once you have solved the central ethical dilemma.

Once you have determined the central ethical dilemma, you can analyse the different ways to resolve the ethical dilemma. Assess each against the different guidelines (informal and formal) and ethical perspectives.

In response part 3 you must present your recommendation on the best way to resolve the ethical dilemma, stating your reasons and drawing on the ethical frameworks covered in response part 2. Why do you think your recommendation is the right one to make?
