Description of Assessment Task and Purpose: Culverts are tunnel structures constructed under buildings, roadways or railways to provide cross drainage or to take electrical or other cables from one side to the other. They are enclosed on the, sides by soil or ground. There are various types of culvert such as pipe, box and arch culverts. Design a pre-cast concrete three-sided box-type culvert section to be constructed under a tramway. This section of the culvert will be totally enclosed by soil or ground over its length. It will be subject to a uniformly distributed vertical load (that is, on its top face) with a magnitude of 15 kN/m2. Lateral earth pressure and reaction pressure at the footings can be neglected in this instance, and the culvert can be considered fixed in all degrees of freedom at its footings. The cross section of an archetypal three-sided box culvert is shown in Figure 1. The design constraints and requirements for the culvert are listed in Figure 2. Select a single combination of rise, wall thickness, span and deck thickness according to the design constraints and, using MATLAB, create a finite element simulation to determine whether or not this combination meets the design requirements.
