Student instructions
Introduction
This assessment activity is designed to cover two achievement standards. However, you may choose to only do 91607 (see above).
To achieve the credits for 91607 you are required to pick two DIFFERENT methods of manipulating genetic transfer and discuss the biological implications of each.
To achieve the credits for 91602 you are required to integrate biological knowledge responding to a socio-scientific issue. You will present a personal position and propose action(s) at a personal and/or societal level.
You will be assessed on the comprehensiveness of your response and on the extent to which you justify your response by analysing and evaluating relevant biological knowledge.
You will be assessed on the comprehensiveness of your report and the extent to which you link biological ideas about human manipulations of genetic transfer and its biological implications.
IMPORTANT NOTE:If you choose to do the additional 91602 socio-scientific issues internal, then the information from one of the case studies chosen in the 91607 genetic manipulation internal will be used as part of your evidence. To satisfy the 91602 internal, this case study MUST be from aSouth Pacific country and MUST be ananimal. |
Task Outline
Produce a written report that researches human manipulations of genetic transfer and their biological implications
- Select two different methods of genetic manipulation of genetic transfer from:
- Selective breeding
- Cloning
- Transgenesis
- Gene regulation
You may use one of the case studies outlined in this document.
If you choose your own case study, you must check its suitability with the teacher before writing.
- Select a case study that you will research for each of your chosen methods (two case studies in total)
- Ensure one of these case studies occurred in a South Pacific country(e.g. New Zealand; Australia; Fiji, Samoa etc) AND is an animal to ensure that it is a controversial topic.
Write a report
Produce a written report of these human manipulations of genetic transfer and their biological implications.
In your report you will explain the story line for two different case studies which includes how the organisms were selected for use in the method, the techniques used, through to the birth of the new organism.
91607 criteria (must be covered for BOTH methods
- Outline the biological ideas (i.e techniques)to explain how humans manipulate genetic transfer in your chosen methods (biological ideas is plural - 2 techniques for each method)
- Explain the biological implicationsof each manipulation, such as the impact on:
- ecosystems
- genetic biodiversity
- health or survival of individuals
- survival of populations
- evolution of populations.
- Link the biological ideasabout each manipulation to at least two biological implicationsof each of your two methods. The linking of ideas will involve comparing and contrasting aspects of the manipulations.
91602 criteria (must be covered for the ONE method that is a socio-scientific issue)
- Remember the issue MUST be of direct relevance to New Zealand and/or the South Pacific
- Describe why / how your chosen topic is a socio-scientific issue.
- Explain the social implications, these may be economic, ethical, cultural or environmental.
- Different opinionsor viewpoints (for and against) that named individuals, groups or organisations have (consider how bias may influence these opinions).
- Use the biological knowledge(from 91607 above) you have gathered to present your:
- personal position/ opinion
- proposed actionat the personal or societal level
- give reasons (with supporting evidence) to explain why you chose this position and proposed action(s)
- Analyse and evaluate the biological knowledgerelated to the issue tojustify your positionand proposed action(s). You must use evidence(e.g. data) to support your justifications.
- AND:
- compare the significance of the biological and social implications of the issue OR
- consider the likely effectiveness of yourand / or societys proposed action(s) OR
- comment on your sources and information by considering ideas such as:
- validity (date / currency, peer review status, scientific acceptance),
- bias (attitudes, values, beliefs), i.e. weighing up how science ideas are used by different groups.
Referencing and evidence of processing information
MUST provide evidence of processing information. This consists of the following:
- Complete and submit a Digital Logbook (four sources)
- In text referencing for quotations
- Foot noting throughout report
Failure to reference your material is a form of plagiarism and will most likely result in you not achieving the standard.
As this report can be written outside of the classroom, to ensure authenticity your teacher may question you about the content of your reportto confirm your understanding. Students who are unable to demonstrate a sufficient understanding to the level of their report will bring into question their assessments authenticity, and risk not achieving the standard.
Word limits
- Each internal has a word limit of 3000 words
Combined double internal = 6000 words
