You have already spent some time understanding the initial requirements for the Tropica network. 

You now need to meet the Tropica client representative to find out more about their business and its network requirements. 

Attendees to this meeting will include Stavros Popov, the IT Manager at Tropica and your manager Paula Lee, Manager of the Infrastructure Division, Teratech. The agenda for this meeting is as follows:

  1. Project definition for Tropica’s network including business problems, opportunities, scope, objectives and budget
  2. Clarification of business requirements for Tropica’s network including the extent to which virtualisation to be implemented

You can assume that Stavros and Paula have a very high level of IT technical knowledge. Stavros is very familiar with the existing and planned network.

It is important that you keep notes during this meetings as you will need this information to complete tasks later in this assessment.

Part 2: Server & Virtual Network Design

In this part of the assessment you will research and design a network server to meet the business requirements. This server will make use of virtualisation.

Scenario - Tropica’s current situation

You have been asked to examine the current setup of the Tropica’s servers to assist you in designing and prototyping the new virtual servers. Currently Tropica has:

  • An Active Directory domain controller called Mainserver
  • Another member server named Server2012.

Currently Server2012 has:

  • IIS web server installed with a website at the default location
  • MS-SQL database server installed including a database called Northwind.

You will need to migrate Tropica’s data that is currently stored on the hard drive of Server2012. 

You will also need to include a Windows client machine, called Clientvm, as part of your design and prototyping.

Mainserver, Server2012 and Clientvm are all objects in the domain tropica.tafe. 

The budget for this project is $20,000.

Task 2.1 

Research and analyse two alternative virtualisation software vendors who offer different virtualisation scenarios (products). To do this:

  • Include a brief background of each vendor
  • Provide an overview of each vendor’s Type 1 Virtualisation environment
  • Create a relative comparison table for the vendors virtualisation product summarising the following technical specifications:
    • Product’s primary purpose
    • System requirements
    • Footprint
    • Ease of use
    • Integration of guest to host
    • Client software (if required)
  • Include costing information relevant to the business requirements
  • Create a risk analysis of the two virtualisation products relevant to the business requirements

  • Network services and their configuration

  • Operational issues

Task 2.5

Based on your Virtual Network Design prepare a working prototype of the Tropica’s virtual network using Cisco Packet Tracer software.

Task 2.7

Scenario – Meeting with client - Server and Virtual Network Design 

You have developed your server and Virtual Network Design and now need to meet with the Tropica client representative to provide your report, gain approval for you proposed preferred plan and sign-off for this stage. 

Attendees to this meeting will include Stavros Popov, the IT Manager at Tropica. The agenda for this meeting is as follows:

  1. Confirmation of NOS, server applications and Server Design
  2. Proposed preferred plan
  3. Resources required
  4. Recommendations from the client 
  5. Sign-off for Server and Virtual Network Design 

Part 3: Server installation preparation

In this part of the assessment your will prepare for the installation of the server including the virtual network. 

Task 3.1 

Based on your Server Design and Virtual Network Design, create and document a Deployment Plan for the Tropica network as part of the quality assurance process. In the Deployment Plan you need to:

  1. Review your Server Design and Virtual Network Design including any required installation options.
  2. Prepare a detailed task list which specifies stages, work required and sequence. This will be used as an installation checklist
  3. Ensure that you consider WH&S as per the enterprise workplace health and safety (WH&S) processes and procedures contained in the IT WH&S Compliance checklist (IT_WH&S_Compliance_checklist.pdf). This includes ensuring that all worker’s obligations are met as per the current NSW work health and safety legislation

Task 3.2 

Scenario

Although Teratech is designing and installing the new server and virtual network, ultimately it will be Tropica support staff who will be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the network. This may include adjusting configuration settings on the server, adjusting configuration settings the virtual network environment, or rebuilding the server should there be a hardware failure.

With this in mind you have been asked by Paula Lee, Manager of the Infrastructure Division and your manager, to identify and analyse the training requirements for the Tropica support staff.

Based on your Server Design, Virtual Network Design and the business requirements, analyse and document the education and training requirements for the Tropica network support staff. In the training requirements you need to:

  1. Describe each of the areas in which Tropica network support staff require training
  2. Ensure that you include training relating to WH&S as per the enterprise workplace health and safety (WH&S) processes and procedures contained in the IT WH&S Compliance checklist (IT_WH&S_Compliance_checklist.pdf). This includes ensuring that all worker’s obligations are met as per the current NSW work health and safety legislation

  1. WH&S requirements
  2. Proposed Deployment Plan including down times
  3. Site access

You can assume that both Stavros has a very high level of IT technical knowledge. Stavros is very familiar with the existing and planned network.

Task 3.5

Scenario

After meeting with the client, Teratech wants you to prepare a WH&S (Work, Health and Safety) statement for the client, Tropica, before you commence the installation of the servers.

This WH&S Statement will give Tropica an overview of the WH&S risks, associated with the installation of the server, and how these risks will be mitigated. 

Prepare a WH&S Statement for the client Tropica including the following:

  1. An overview of any potential risks associated with the following WH&S areas: 
    • Electrical safety 
    • Manual handling of equipment 
    • Personal safety.
  2. Recommendations on site specific processes and procedures for how Tropica staff might minimise or eliminate any of these hazards, in advance of your installation.

Ensure that your risk assessment is based on current Federal and State laws and regulations.

Check that your WH&S statement is in line with site specific safety requirements and enterprise workplace health and safety (WH&S) processes and procedures contained in the IT WH&S Compliance checklist (IT_WH&S_Compliance_checklist.pdf) supplied to you by Teratech. This includes ensuring that all worker’s obligations are met as per the current NSW work health and safety legislation.

Part 4: Server installation

In this part of the assessment you will be required to install the servers and document any changes.

Virtual Machines

To assist you in developing your design and prototype you have been supplied with 3 virtual machines Mainserver, Server2012 and Clientvm. These will need to be installed in a virtual environment using the virtualisation software provided by your assessor.

Task 4.1

To prepare for the server installation, and to follow Teratech Data Backup Policy (Data_Backup_Policy.pdf), you must ensure backups are taken as follows. This will enable restoration capability in the event of a disaster:

  1. Backup the supplied virtual machines. Store the backups on your removable drive with your full name at the end i.e. Mainserver_yourname, Server2012_yourname, Clientvm_yourname where yourname is your full name.
  2. Backup the local data you need to migrate, as described in the Data Migration Requirements (see Task 2.2) and again save this to your removable drive.

Log your actions. Include your screen shots below along with a description of your actions.

Task 4.2 

Follow your Deployment Plan (see Task 3.1) to install and configure the Tropica server as per the technical requirements and functional specifications. This includes:

  • Following WH&S requirements as per the WH&S Statement (see task 3.5)
  • Ensuring you are using the relevant operating systems
  • Applying any patches to the operating systems to ensure maximum security and reliability
  • Ensuring update services are configured to provide automatic updates for operating system
  • Ensuring you are applying the requested applications, additional tools or third party software as specified in design
  • Configuring applications
  • Applying any patches to the applications to ensure maximum security and reliability
  • Ensuring update services are configured to provide automatic updates for applications 
  • Configuring network services including:
    • domain name system (DNS)
    • dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP)
    • web and proxy mail
    • file transfer protocol (FTP)
    • firewall
  • Implementing the security design to prevent unauthorised access to system
  • Restoring any local data as per the Teratech Data Backup Policy (Data_Backup_Policy.pdf) and Data Migration Requirements (see Task 2.2)
  • Reconnecting and reconfiguring any connectivity devices such as printers
  • Cleaning-up and restoring the worksite -
    To provide evidence of this action take a photo of the clean worksite and include this, along with a description, in the box below along with your other screen shots and descriptions.

When troubleshooting any server or network failures ensure that you log any tools and techniques you use to diagnose and correct server problems. You may refer to any vendor and technical specifications.

Task 4.3

Test the server for benchmarking against the client specification and requirements according to the Test Plan (see Task 3.3) and record the outcomes.

As you progress ensure that you analyse any error reports or results and make changes as required. Ensure that you test any required changes or additions. You should also validate changes or additions against specifications to ensure you are still meeting the system requirements.

When troubleshooting any server or network failures ensure that you log any tools and techniques you use to diagnose and correct server problems. You may refer to any vendor and technical specifications.

Record the outcome of your testing, including all specific numerical data, in your Tropica Network Report under Test Results using suitable sub-headings and tables. See also Task 4.5.

Task 4.4 

Scenario

During network monitoring you have been notified that a Tropica worker is unable to connect to the network. He is getting an error message indicating that there is an IP conflict (duplicate address) with a printer in the client network. The printer has an IP address ending in …XX.115. 

You recognise that you need to make a configuration change to DHCP so that error no longer occurs, i.e. the address 192.168.XX.115 is no longer to be issued by your DHCP server.

Make the required changes so that the DHCP server no longer issues the IP address ending …XX.115. Test and validate the required changes or additions against the above specification to ensure the problem has been resolved.

When troubleshooting ensure that you log any tools and techniques you use to diagnose and correct server problems.

Record the outcome of your testing in your Tropica Network Report under Test Results using suitable sub-headings and tables. See also Task 4.5.

Task 4.5

After testing is completed, and all troubleshooting and changes have been done, you must document the changes and update the relevant sections in your Tropica Network Report. 

You must ensure that the problems detected in Tasks 4.3 and 4.4 are clearly identified and the changes made to the relevant specification in your Tropica Network Report.

Part 5 Finalise work

In this part of the assessment you will complete tasks to finalise the work including providing user documentation, providing your final report, notification of the network status, ensuring that all clean-up and restoration has been completed and meeting with the client to ensure that the project is completed to the clients satisfaction.

Task 5.1 

Scenario

You have been asked to supply user documentation for Tropica to assist them in the operational changes required in maintaining the server's virtual network. The documentation needs to include all required configuration information along with instructions of how and where to enter the required values in the virtualisation software. The document does not need to include instructions for installing the virtualisation software.

Prepare the user documentation for the Tropica Server's Virtual Network. Your document should include screen shots along with instructional text. It will be aimed at the Tropica's IT Manager and may therefore include highly technical information. It must however still be presented in a clear and concise manner.
