Aim of the Assessment:

This assessment is intended to engage you in applying topic knowledge in your critical thinking about intersectionality. The purpose of the assessment is for you to engage in a reflective process that includes an examination of your own identity and position in society and the potential impact it may have in helping relationships with people who experience structural disadvantage and oppression. You are expected to be able to recognize your own potential contribution to challenging social injustice when you practice as a Social Worker in a human services setting and articulate your emerging perspectives regarding diverse, competent, and inclusive social work practice in relation to client systems.

Instructions:

Choose one target group or field of practice that interests you in the Australian context, such as child protection, people living with disabilities, mental health, homelessness, aged care, domestic violence, refugees, drug and alcohol services, LGBTIQA+ people, correctional services, schools or sexual assault services.

Discuss how service participants in this field of practice might experience social inequality or injustice (in relation to key concepts in the topic such as disadvantage, oppression, and marginalization).

Discuss how a Social Worker could apply an intersectional lens when working with service participants in this field of practice.

What would you need to consider about your own identity and diverse characteristics when working with service participants in this field? This may include your own areas of privilege in society and how these might impact on your interactions with service participants.

Your grasp of theoretical concepts from the topic, such as intersectionality, and how you employ these ideas to elaborate your ideas.An ability to reflect on your own identity and diverse characteristics, and how these may impact your interactions with others. This may include reflecting on your own areas of privilege in society.

Your capacity to critically analyze what you see, read, and hear.

A written expression that is clear i.e. makes sense to the assessor.

Your capacity to develop a clear relationship between the different elements of your assignment.

Avoidance of extraneous or irrelevant material.

Your ability to be reflexive in your writing.

Guidelines:

This assignment can be written in the first or the third person, e.g. I/me for examples or reflections about yourself.

Use a minimum of 10 academic references. You must include relevant chapters from the textbook and at least two other relevant readings from the reading list. Include some references that go beyond the topic literature, including some references that are specific to your chosen field of practice. Government and other documents are grey literature you can use them but they do not count in your list of 10 references.

Include an introduction and conclusion.

You must include a reference list at the end of your assignment, using the APA referencing format.
