State of SOCIAL dimension of globalization:
Post cold war era, created an idea of the world being a shared space. (M1 globalization, LSE & GetSmarter, 2020) The idea of capitalism where US emerged as a country that every other country looked up to. While capitalism created an increase of living standards in the western world, the positive effects did not trickle down as it should be have been to the developing nations. Capitalism brought about migration and movement of labour from under developed economies to more developed economies that resulted into exploitation of labour and abuse of resources. The kind of forced migration also lead to civil unrest in many countries that be became the genesis of anti-globalization movement. Governments on the other hand responded to growing popular concerns over immigration by imposing stricter limitations on the movement of people.
Solution: The western (developed) economies should step up and bridge the gap of sharing of wealth across countries. Labor to be optimally utilised and relevant concern of anti-globalization should be addressed. Global trade and upliftment of societies in under develop economies would help bring down the dissatisfaction and unrest among a faction of the society that did not benefit from the positive impacts of globalization.
Key events that shaped the social dimension in this era: (M1 globalization, LSE & GetSmarter, 2020)
1993 UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR):In order to protect shared social values globally and to reflect the commitment to the protection of human rights, UNHCHR was established. Under this, the commissioner is tasked with the promotion and protection of human rights as it defined in the international law.
1997 Bird Flu:
As this has been established earlier that one of the major social element that this era saw was the migration and movement of labour. This means that it became difficult to contain any outbreak of disease or pandemic. That is what happened when the first case of bird flu was discovered in Hong Kong. The disease spread rapidly to other Asian countries and other parts of the world due to globalization effects and movement of labour.
1999 - Seattle anti-globalisation movement:
While there was a large section of the society which supported globalization, the idea against the same started taking shape. Many anti globalization activities were witnessed during this period, that reflected the discontent of a small section of the society that was against the idea of the world as one shared space. The first major such protest occurred outside the World Trade Organizations 1999 Seattle Conference. This represented an important shift in public opinion around the benefits of globalisation.
2004 Facebook:
While this can be termed as a technological intervention, the basis of Facebook was to give a global platform for social development. This can be considered as one of the important events that shaped the social fabric in post cold war era. This created a new era of social connectivity.
2011 The Arab Spring:
The Arab Spring is considered to be a wave of violent and non-violent protests that swept through the Middle East and North Africa. Under this the protesters demanded greater democracy and the overthrow of autocratic regimes and many a times, it turned violent. What was unusual about the event was the use of social media as a means through which individuals could engage in collective activism.
State of TECHNOLOGICAL dimension of globalization:
One of the key events that shaped the technological landscape in post cold war era was the introduction of WWW (World Wide Web). This brought about a total transformation in the way globalization was seen. Lowered communication costs greatly increased the free flow of information and knowledge.
Commercial internet expanded global economy and flow of information got faster. There was a multifold increase in the flow of good, services and information. Over 4 billion people got access to internet, which raised some pertinent questions on data privacy and data security. This threat led to institutions building restrictions and protocols to protect sensitive data. Many countries created policies to prevent data theft which bought a negative effect to global economy through these restrictions.
