Due Date: 25 March 2024 at 9:00 AM
Weight: 30%
Type: Written Assessment
Submission: via Learning@Griffith
Word Count: 1,000
Task Aim and Rationale:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undoubtedly exploded regarding content writing and dissemination of educational information since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022. This popularity is understandable given the immediate generation of content (positive reinforcement) with little response effort!
However, with the good can also come risks. These risks are in the form of unintentional inaccuracies, absence of sources and/or sources that are not of high standards and plagiarism.
The field of ABA stands apart from other disciplines devoted to understanding and improving human behaviour regarding its focus, goals, and methods. Behaviour analysis identifies strongly as a science, first and foremost. It is further characterised by seven core dimensions, which define the philosophical, theoretical, and methodological approaches that applied behaviour analysis takes.
By providing a critique of AI-generated blogs, this task is designed to help you develop and demonstrate a deep understanding of the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of applied behaviour analysis by applying your knowledge of:
(1) the attitudes to science AND
(2) the seven dimensions of applied behaviour analysis
This deep understanding will be beneficial to you in research, educational and clinical settings of applied behaviour analysis.
Task Description:
For this task, you need to write TWO (2) blog posts (EACH 500 words) in which you critique two hypothetical AI-generated pieces of content (blogs) about the characteristics of science and dimensions of ABA (Outlined on pages 3 and 4).
In each blog, you need to:
Critique the AI-generated content, highlighting both the good aspects and the areas that require improvements and edits (150 words)
Rewrite the content to improve accuracy, including by referring to at least three high-standard sources (350 words).
Formatting Requirements:
Although it is recognised that typical blog posts do not tend to use many references to published literature, for the purposes of this task, please adhere to APA 7th Edition formatting for references and provide a reference list at the end of each blog (note: title of blog and reference list is not counted in the word count). It is acceptable to be a maximum of 10% over or under word count on this assignment.
The critique section of each blog may be in bullet point format.
The rewrite section of each blog must be in paragraph format.
Portrait orientation on a white background
Font: black, 12-point, Times New Roman font
Spacing: Double spacing
This task aligns with the followingCourse Learning Outcomes:
Identify and describe the attitudes of science and explain why ABA is first and foremost a science.

Science has a lot of Attitude!
Who knew that science could pack a lot of attitude?
As we know, the world would be a far less fascinating, vibrant, and fulfilling world without the immense scientific contributions to understanding our world, animals, humans and behaviour. What do we mean when we talk about science having attitude, is science talking back to teachers and not doing its homework? No, thats not what we mean! Attitudes of science refer to five key sentiments that must be fulfilled in order to constitute a science.
These attitudes are as follows:
Determinism: this means that most of what we do is governed by the law. This is the law of the world and all of its relationships. Events (behaviours) do not just happen willy-nilly, there is a reason for all events, so we need to keep this attitude in mind when we begin to think scientifically about a phenomenon.
Empiricism: this is the attitude that relates to testing our reasoning with experimentation. We need to manipulate variables, collect data and understand if we are right or wrong.
Replication: this means repeating your experiment againand maybe again to be sure our data are indeed correct.
Parsimony: sometimes the most obvious solution is the correct one. The lesson to learn here is to stop overthinking, put aside your overanalytical, and overloaded brain and see the woods from the trees. Period.
Philosophical doubt: find your inner Socrates, I think, therefore I am, he was a smart man. Think deeply and beyond the obvious to question the innermost and unlikely, (but plausible) causes of the area under study.
In conclusion, if you can combine all of the above and apply it to your field of study, you will be one scientist who is packing a lot of attitude. Go forth and discover new phenomena!

GETACAB and take a ride on the Seven Dimensions of ABA
GETACAB is a popular mnemonic to help understand these dimensions outlined by Baer, Wolf and Risely (1958). They are as follows: Generalisation, Effective, Technological, Applied, Conceptual, Analytical, and Behaviour.
But what good is reciting a set of rote-learning gibberish if we dont truly understand how they apply to our practice?
Let's explore with a common thread of examples (cooking skills) to enhance your understanding of this philosophy.
Generality: behaviours targeted must be repeated in other places, people and things. Say, I was to learn how to cook a recipe in my kitchen. I then move houses and because I am surrounded by different pots, pans and utensils I am unable to repeat the recipe.
Effective: what we teach must actually work! If I learn a new recipe, and I only know the first two ingredients to use, it will not result with a tasty cake!
Technological: science is full of technology, so it is imperative to use this state-of-the-art technology in our teaching and intervention design. If we are writing out our cooking recipe, we should have clear steps along with the technological apparatus required (weighing scales, mixer etc).
Applied: behaviours targeted should be meaningful to that specific individual. For example, if cooking is a skill I want to learn as its important to my health and daily living, then it is prioritised, and I choose what meal(s) I would like to learn.
Conceptual: If the principles that we use in ABA must be consistent with those found in behavioural sources. If we are going to teach baking a cake, which has several complex steps, we may look to these behavioural sources and see that using a task analysis and a chaining procedure is effective in breaking teaching these steps.
Analytic: ...meaning we should take data! By which we can analyse these data and assess whether our interventions have been effective. We can take data on the correct steps in my recipe before and after exposure to the intervention.
Behavioural: the behaviours that we target must be an observable behaviour. We should see the effects of behaviour on its environment for it to be countable, and thus behavioural. We need to be able to see my cooking skills, selecting the correct utensils, mixing the ingredients, and setting the oven correctly to constitute behaviours.
Remember the seven dimensions of ABA are the core set of principles that need to be evident for interventions to be truly effective. Now that you are equipped with the seven ingredients for the dimensions of ABA, go GETACAB home to bake a cake!
