Due: Monday March 25th 2024, 11.59pm
Weighting: 40%
Time / Word limit: 300 words or equivalent (SCU Policy allows for +/- 10%. Markers will stop reading at 350 words)
Note: You are not permitted to use any text generating software, including generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as chatbots, to complete this assignment.
What is the assessment?
You will produce a poster which expresses your philosophy of education. You will use a combination of words, images and text. In this poster, you will provide a rationale for your philosophy of education, explaining how it was informed by the theories, frameworks, standards, principles and priorities explored in Modules 1 and 2.
How will I complete the assessment?
As a future classroom teacher, you should have the confidence to utilise a variety of modes when teaching your students and be able to support your students to share their own understandings in a variety of ways in your classroom. There are a wide variety of ways in which we (and our future students) can demonstrate understanding. In your poster, you will include visuals to demonstrate your understanding and engagement with the learning in Modules 1 & 2. Your poster should be an original contribution based on your own understanding and not taken from the internet (plagiarism). Include in-text references that adhere to APA 7th guidelines see the Referencing Text and Images in Assessment 1 (Poster) referencing guide for this assessment in Assessment Tasks and Submissions > Assessment 1.
Some examples include:
- A mind-map / brainstorm (on paper, in Word, PowerPoint, Canva, Pixelied, Piktochart, or another format). Take a photo or a screen shot.
- Infographic created in Canva (or similar software). Canva for free - Windows and Mac.
- Comic strip / graphic novel panel
- Something else
Using Creative Commons images like those available in Canva mean that you do not need to include a reference for the image. If the image is from an education authority website (i.e., NESA, AITSL, ACARA, etc.), you will need to attribute the source (copyright) - see the Referencing Text and Images in Assessment 1 (Poster) referencing guide for this assessment in Assessment Tasks and Submissions > Assessment 1.
The recommended word count for your poster is maximum 300 words. Keep in mind that you can communicate a lot through the images you select and how to use them. Aim to communicate as much information as you can through images / visuals. Use text to support this as required. You can submit your poster as a Word doc or PDF.
Note: The word count of 300 words or equivalent accommodates the significant research and preparation that is included in the construction of this poster. Please adhere to the word limit of max. 300 words in your actual poster.
In-text references and reference list are not included in the word count.
You will submit your assessment using the template provided for the assessment (Word). You can copy and paste your poster into the template and complete your reference list. You cannot create your own template and must use the template provided in this unit.
All responses should be considered professional. This means that they are suitable to be shown to a senior leader in a school. Be mindful that as a university assessment, accurate APA 7th in-text referencing and a reference list is expected. See the rubric for further guidance. The Southern Cross University Academic Integrity Framework aims to develop a holistic, systematic and consistent approach to addressing academic integrity across the entire University. For more information see the SCU Academic Integrity Framework. Note: Academic Integrity breaches include: poor referencing, not identifying direct quotations correctly, close paraphrasing, plagiarism, recycling, misrepresentation, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, fabricating information. Note: You are not permitted to use any text generating software, including generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as chatbots, to complete this assignment.
Reference list
A reference list for all sources cited in your poster must be included in the Template. A reference list includes only the sources that were mentioned in your poster. So, when you include an author / year in your
poster, it must be in your reference list. This includes referencing copyrighted images. You cannot include sources in your reference list that are not cited in your response. As a university assessment, accurate APA
7 th in-text referencing and reference list is expected on your poster and in your reference list. If you include copyright images, you will also need to attribute the source of the images on your poster and in a Figure List. For more guidance, refer to the Referencing Text and Images in Assessment 1 (Poster) referencing guide for this assessment in Assessment Tasks and Submissions > Assessment 1.
For the purposes of Criteria 1 where markers will be looking for your ability to link to a variety of AITSL standards, your in-text reference for these will include a specific reference to the APST. For example (APST4.3, AITSL, 2017).
How do I know what Im being marked on?
Read the rubric before you start the assessment, while you complete it, and again before submission. You can find this in Assessment Tasks and Submissions > Assessment 1 > Rubric on MySCU.
Aspects to consider while creating your poster:
The poster should include words and images, to provide a sense of your philosophy of education. You may use any program to produce it (e.g., PowerPoint, Canva, Pixelied, Piktochart).
The poster should demonstrate how your philosophy has been informed by educational theories, frameworks, standards, principles and priorities, along with your own experiences.
Ensure you make very clear links between what you believe (your philosophy) and what the current educational documents say about education (theories, frameworks, standards, principles and priorities).
You must show evidence of your deep engagement with Modules 1 and 2. Your philosophy may also be influenced by your own life experiences. Ensure this is balanced with support from credible sources.
The ability to communicate your ideas is central to being an effective teacher. Ensure that you to demonstrate your ability to express your thinking with clarity of expression. It would be advisable to
construct a plan for including images and text for your poster before you start creating it.
Ensure that your poster / rationale reads like the thinking of a pre-service teacher who is familiar with current educational language (e.g., inclusion, diversity, environment, curriculum).
Ensure you take care with paraphrasing and using direct quotes. Strictly adhere to the APA7th guidelines, and then again to check your work before submission. Refer to the Referencing Text and
Images in Assessment 1 (Poster) referencing guide for this assessment in Assessment Tasks and Submissions > Assessment 1.
