EDEC309 - A2 Info

0:00This is the assessment information for edex 309 assessment 2, the reflective essay, which is 2000 words equivalent.

0:08The summary year students will write a reflective essay on leadership styles and personal goals.

0:13This must include a discussion on which leadership styles and characteristics are important to educational leadership, A reflection on the student's preferred leadership styles and how it relates to their personal pedagogy and values, as well as governing documents such as EYF, NASA, NQS, and NQF.

0:31A reflection on the student's current strengths and weaknesses and short and long term goals as well.

0:40Week 6.

0:41We'll have the resources for you to access.

0:43This can also be found in Assessment Resources, but they're also here to guide you.

0:48You will find the scaffold and the rubric and there are two references here.

0:53You do not need to read these articles as separate ones.

0:57These are the references because in your work, in your assessment, you are going to refer to the working styles model.

1:04You are going to refer to the four frame approach.

1:07These are two approaches that you're going to be looking at in depth within the lecture as well as your tutorials.

1:13So again, you are not required to find these articles because we have provided that information to you already.

1:19These references are there so that you're putting it into your own work as well.

1:24So they're already provided for you.

1:29Referring to the scaffold.

1:31This is what is going to guide you in how to shape your assessment.

1:35The first section is a discussion on which leadership styles and characteristics are important to educational leadership.

1:42Only refer to the leadership and working styles that are discussed in Lecture 6 and we have provided you those handouts.

1:49Those references as mentioned in the past slide are there for you to reference.

1:56The handouts have been provided to you, so you're only referring to those.

2:00The keywords in here is a discussion.

2:03You will discuss the value of these.

2:06The next keyword is educational leadership.

2:08You may start looking at other areas of the workforce.

2:12We are asking you to look at only what applies in early learning services.

2:17You are going to discuss what works within a service, what may not work in a service, and why we need multiple different parts of leadership and working styles in that service as well.

2:29Why?

2:31Part 2 is a reflection on the students preferred leadership styles and how it relates their personal pedagogy and values as well as those governing documents.

2:40Then referring back to those same leadership styles and working styles.

2:43You are going to now delve in and just talk about what is important to you, where you fit in.

2:51It's important you link back to these leadership and working styles because you've just discussed in Part 1 this is what is required in a service.

2:59Part 2 is going to be this is who I am.

3:02It is a reflection.

3:04I statements are encouraged and you're going to discuss this in a relatable way, which is personal to you as well as what is true and you are actually discussing this in a practical way.

3:18Part 3 is a reflection on the students current strengths and weaknesses and short and long term goals.

3:25So this is breaking down into areas.

3:28What do you do really well?

3:30Provide those examples.

3:31What is it that you do really well?

3:33What areas need growth and provide those examples.

3:36You're going to discuss your long term goals, so perhaps one or two and being specific and they should be achievable within a six to 12 month period.

3:45Your short term goals, so you may look at those long term goals and break those down even smaller.

3:51So perhaps you're looking at two or three into those short term goals, ideally 3, again being specific and what is going to be achievable within a three, maybe 6 month period.

4:03Again, it's a reflection and it's going to talk about what you're really good at and what you need work on.

4:10If you actually followed this correctly, you're actually highlighting what your working style and leadership style is, what you need to work on, what you need to grow on, and if you actually think about what it is you need areas of growth, this is where your long and short term goals should link to that.

4:29So for example, you're not going to start talking about that.

4:32You need to build on your communication with families and then your long term and short term goals is inclusion.

4:39Try and find the link that connects all of this together.

4:44Let's look at the rubric.

4:45As always, we want you to aim high.

4:49However, let's look at what is a fail grade and what is a pass grade.

4:53It's important that we sort of look at what is the fail grade because this becomes that danger zone and we want you to stay out of there.

4:59So if we're looking at actually the question the student does not adequately address, the question demonstrates little understanding of the leadership and working style.

5:08This will be if you only start giving us descriptions of what is a leadership and working style and you only describe what they are and you basically are summarising what has already been provided to you.

5:22We know what they are.

5:23We want to know what you know of them and how it applies to the practical, which is where you're going into the past area.

5:31However, it remains as a past where you've only remained on the surface.

5:35If you've not delved deeper, if you've not given us a solid comprehension of all of these leadership and working styles, that's going to keep you into the past.

5:44It's also important that you are actually connecting all of them.

5:49We don't want to hear about them as one by one by one.

5:52If you're just listing them and not actually cohesively putting them together and connecting them, that is probably going to lead to your failing the assessment when we actually look at what is your reflection and your understanding to the fail.

6:08If you're going to, again, remain descriptive and you're actually not putting in your voice, we always want to hear your voice because this is a leadership unit.

6:17We want you to understand what the theory means.

6:20So that's where it goes into that parse area.

6:23So you're still a bit descriptive, but we're seeing what is important to you and what it actually means to you, and we're hearing those I statements coming back to what is a pass and what is a fail.

6:37You may not have put any referencing in there, or it's quite limited to actually that I statements coming in there.

6:44Again, this is the real clear part of that reflective essay.

6:49While that essay word is there, we don't want you to think about this as an essay.

6:54You can absolutely use those headings to write underneath for because that keeps it clear.

7:00It becomes a report as to what is valuable.

7:03Always imagine that when you are delivering these sort of assessments that one of us is sitting in front of you and you're telling us if you are relying too heavily on external sources without your own understanding of what those sources mean, that is going to lead to a fail.

7:22We want you to use these documents as working documents.

7:26Consider using these documents and walking into your service and being able to deliver this information to your service as well.

7:34And finally, we're looking at how you've actually written it.

7:39If you are relying very heavily on AI and Grammarly to write your work, we are going to understand that you've not comprehended how to put this into your own wording that will lead to a fail.

7:52We want to see your own language in this, that it is essentially informal but professional, because this should be written in the form of a report.

8:05We always look at what is professional, but we're not wanting or expecting really strong academia in this because we really want to see this coming from you.

8:17And it is written in your own wording in your own language.

8:21And again, the final point on all of this is thinking about what those keywords are.

8:25It is reflective.

8:27It is about your own personal understanding of who you are.

8:31It's your own personal understanding of what is important within a service.

8:35Because if you're thinking about hiring a staff for your service, you need to ensure that you've got different people working in there and you're always going to think about they this person is like this.

8:47They need this person to balance them out.

8:49So it's really important you're reflecting on all of this to ensure that you're meeting a high standard in this assessment.
