Purpose: The purpose of this task is to enable you to consolidate your learning throughout the unit and to consider the implications of your learning for you, personally, and for your professional practice. 

Step One: Introduce and analyse an issue  

PART A asks you to provide a clear and succinct discussion and analysis of an issue or challenge  that you may encounter in your role as a teacher (consider the contexts in which you will be  working – primary, secondary or early childhood) 

  • Choose a challenge from the list below to complete PART A. (Some of challenges have been  identified or explored in different ways in the final modules and would be suitable for the final  assignment). 
  • Choose only ONE issue or challenge and consider a scenario related to that issue. 
  • Remember: the focus is not so much on the scenario itself, but instead to consider how your learning in this unit helps you as a professional to respond to this situation/challenge. 

Step Two: Provide a professional response to the issue  

PART B asks you to discuss how you might respond to your chosen issue as an educator 

  • Draw on some of the scholarly materials of this unit to support and inform your response. Focus  mainly on materials from weeks 6-12, but some information from weeks 1-6 may be incorporated if  relevant. 
  • In your response, you must draw from relevant legal, social or ethical frameworks
  • You must also engage with at least 1 relevant standard from the Australian Professional Standards  for Teachers  

Step Three: Conclude with a critical reflection on your role as a teacher  

PART C asks you to provide a brief critical reflection on how your understanding of your role as a  teacher has developed throughout this unit and, in doing so, to demonstrate your understanding  of the relationship between philosophy, theory and educational practice.  

  • With reference to the teaching philosophy, you developed for task 1, discuss and justify your  emerging understandings of the role of the teacher in educational contexts today (early childhood,  primary , secondary or both primary and Secondary). This critical brief reflection will not simply  repeat your previous philosophy, so do not quote from your first assignment or copy sections from  it. Instead, the reflection should indicate your learning development and extend the ideas you  introduced in Assignment 1. You should now be able to expand and broaden your teaching  philosophy. 
    • Be sure to reflect on and note any new knowledge, skills, values, or competencies you now have 
    • Select one of your new learnings to demonstrate your improved understanding of the role of  the teacher
    • Identify one area for professional growth 
  • Be sure to refer to resources engaged in the unit to demonstrate your understanding of the  relationship between philosophy, theory and educational practice 

Step four: Proof-read your work before you submit

  • Make sure you leave enough time for proof-reading to identify and correct inconsistencies. 

Step five: Reference your sources!  

  • Make some time to check your APA conventions (See LibGuide linked in the Assessment tile in LEO  for sample in-text references and reference lists). 
  • All of the evidence you have used in your assignment in the form of quotations, paraphrases or  summaries need to be included in your list of references.
