EFB226 - Essay Topic - Assessment 2

Note: Based largely on lectures 2 & 4

The manufacture and disposal of used clothing is a global problem. Some countries are attempting to address this issue. The essay consists of two main parts.

(a) In the first part of the essay show the following:(1) the magnitude of the problem (e.g. disposal) on a country/global scale, (2) what actions are being taken, (3) what areas are being addressed (manufacturing or disposal or both), and (4) what gaps remain that need to be addressed.

(b) In the second part of the essay you are expected to outline an action plan for reducing pollution generated during the manufacturing process and approaches to reduce the amount of used clothing going into landfill. In doing so, please take into account the existing and proposed policies and what new policies you would like to add. In recommending new approaches take into account the public acceptability of the proposed policies, their cost-effectiveness,feasibility, and effectiveness. You are also expected to critique existing policies.

Note: You may use any country or countries as case studies in addressing the relevant issues. To answer the question, please use appropriate theory and empirical evidence. Make sure to analyse the relevant issues in detail. Provide examples of instruments used and discuss their impacts/outcomes. Demonstrate an excellent understanding of the topic and the issues surrounding it. Make sure the data/information you use is current. Please see the rubric for further details.

Solution should make sense to introduce

Solution cant just be to add tax

Solution for consumption should be from an Australian point of view (What can Australia do)

Can use global data and look at the problem on a global scale but the solution should be what can be done within Australia

Solution to reduce consumption/amount of clothing going into landfill should be at a federal state level

Dont have to focus on all the issues (as there are too many) but acknowledge there are many issues
