Assessment Task 1a

Task overview

Assessment name: ReportScoping Study

Task description: Background: Your overall project in this unit is to develop a design concept and functional model of a moveable bridge over the Brisbane River.

Your team (formed in your Week 2 Practical) will act as an engineering consultancy firm.

Client: Brisbane City Council

This task: In this first assessment task, each person will conduct research on the community and users of the project and present this to the client via written report. The scoping study will need to:

Unpack the project brief to determine what the project involves

Understand the location, the need, local context, and community you are designing for

Comment on how your design meets the criteria for a green bridge including key elements of sustainability

Identify 4 potential users within this community and develop a service specification for the project or components within the project based upon their needs using systems architecture.

Findings from this initial scoping study will support your teams preliminary and final design for Assessment 1b and 2.

Learning outcomes measured: Communicate effectively for different audiences using a range of written techniques

Apply foundational research capabilities to source relevant and reliable information

Apply systems architecture to a real-world project.

Due date: Friday Week 5 at 11:59PM

Length: Scoping Study: 1500 2000 words.

Weighting: 20%

Individual/Group: Individual

Authentic Assessment: Yes

How will I be assessed: 7-point grading scale using a rubric

Task details

What you need to do (scoping study): Unpack the initial project brief and determine the important challenges, opportunities and considerations when working to design a moveable bridge for the local communities east of the Story Bridge

Each person will conduct research, analyse the community, and report their findings via a preliminary scoping study.

During your research you should investigate at least 3 of following points:

The location (e.g. geography, demographics, land use)

Social factors (e.g. social norms, behaviours, how the community functions, first nations considerations)

Community engagement (how to engage and consult and who is involved)

Economic factors (how much could this potentially cost, what are the potential benefits, who would be impacted and how)

Environmental impacts (e.g., existing situation, seasonal factors, pollution)

Technical (e.g. accessibility, impacts/links to existing infrastructure/services)

Remember all points must be considered within your group project, you may find it beneficial to ensure all aspects are researched during this assessment within your group.

Based on your research, you must comment on how your proposed design will satisfy the criteria of a green bridge including the key elements that make your design sustainable.

You must then identify 4 potential users and apply the systems architecture approach taught is class to develop a service specification for the project/components within the project. This service specification must be research based with and should be developed using the systems architecture approach.

Write up your research and analysis in the form of an individual report (template supplied) Your report will need to inform the client of the current situation and the identified challenges/opportunities when considering this project.

You will need to convince the client that you understand the project, including location specifics and the communities you are designing for, and your analysis of any potential challenges/opportunities.

Requirements Submit your Scoping Study as an individual 1500 2000- word written report to your client, Brisbane City Council.

In your Week 2 Practical you will be assigned either:

New Farm to Hawthorne

Teneriffe to Bulimba

Include the following sections in your report:

Introduction: Identify the client, the location you are working, and important challenges/opportunities unpacked from the client brief.

Background Research: Present the findings of your research and analysis on your given community (include potential technical, social, economic, and environmental issues associated with the project, where relevant). Make sure you inform the reader of the current situation in relation to your project, what are the community needs, and how did this project come about.

Comment on what elements are required for your design to be considered a green bridge and how these will be considered in your project.

Systems Architecture: Identify four potential users within this community and develop a service specification for the project or components within the project based upon their needs. Include the systems architecture diagram for each user you analyse and provide justification/evidence for your specification.

Appendix:

Charts, maps, diagrams, or additional calculations may be submitted as part of the appendix.

Formatting requirements for report:

Do not write an essay; follow the template.

Diagrams/figures and tables, cover page, and references are not included in the word count but should be included in the report.

Relevant figures and tables must be included in the main body of the report

If you go over the word limit, only the stipulated length of the report will be read by your marker. There is 10% leeway.

Use the headings given in the template as the guide to section headings for your report.

Formatting Settings: 11pt Calibri, Single column, 2.5 cm margins on all four sides with 1.5 line spacing
