Guidelines

Identify a health promotion topic and population groupand use health promotion theory or principles to explain how a broad ranging strategy could be developed for that topic and population group. You can use current strategies as well as your own ideas.

You need to provide a rationale for your choice of topic. Why is this topic important? This must be based in evidence. For example, you can use government reports such as Healthy Ireland or other reports or strategies relating to your topic.

You can then use any health promotion theory, framework, model or principles to plan your strategy. E.g. Naidoo and Wills’ (2009, 2016) 5 approaches to health promotion, Beattie’s map of strategies for health promotion, the Ottawa Charter, (WHO, 1986) or WHO’s 11 principles of health promotion (Rootman et al, 2001)

You must use all aspects of the model or framework to demonstrate full understanding. E.g. if you are using Naidoo and Wills 5 approaches, you must explain how each approach could be used to promote health in your topic area.

Your essay should be clearly structured, with an introduction outlining the essay, main body where you explain the strategy using the theory or principles and a summary and conclusion.

The essay must be supported by health promotion references. These must be from reliable and reputable sources. Wikipedia for e.g. is NOT such a source.

Marks will be awarded for:

Evidence of assessment of health promotion need.

Relevance of the topic.

Use of health promotion theory and evidence.

Clarity of thought in development of the material.
