Refer to the Preface of Laura Dassow Wallss Henry David Thoreau: A Life. (You will find the text on Amazon.ca in the sample of the Kindle edition.)

Refer to one article from a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.

Refer to one more reliable source.

Deal with contrary arguments in the second paragraph of your essay.

Please see section III (Take Home-Essays) of the course outline for details on the formatting of the essay. Also, make sure you read section II (Plagiarism) carefully.

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is a breach of academic integrity. Please be aware of the Colleges Academic Integrity Policy:

https://www.douglascollege.ca/sites/default/files/docs/finance-dates-and- deadlines/Academic Integrity Policy w Flowchart.pdfThe policy lists, defines, and gives examples of academic dishonesty

Plagiarism (taking the writings or ideas of others and passing them off as your own) will result in my recommending to the Responsible Administrator that the student receive a zero for the assignment with no possibility of rewriting. Note that if a tutor, a friend, or a parent writes, or rewrites sentences, or portions of sentences in your paper that is plagiarism. In addition, AI-generated student assignmentsproduced by ChatGPT or Google Translate, for instanceare not acceptable in this class.

For take-home papers it is obviously not enough to simply list your sources in the Works Cited section. Also, claiming that you forgot to document your sources is not an excuse for handing in a plagiarized paper.

In academic papers, you must use parenthetical documentationyour will receive information on the MLA styleto show where you are using the writings of others. This is especially important when you are paraphrasing. Example:

Original: By the time Grahame published The Wind in the Willows in 1908, the stable world that he had known was under threat or actively disintegrating (From Peter Hunts The Wind in the Willows: A Fragmented Arcadia).

Acceptable paraphrase: When The Wind in the Willows came out in 1908, the world with which Kenneth Grahame was familiar had started to fall apart (Hunt 4).

Note that without the parenthetical documentation, i.e. (Hunt 4), the sentence is plagiarized.

Unacceptable paraphrase: When Kenneth Grahame published The Wind in the Willows, the stable world that he had known was under threat or disintegrating (Hunt 4).

In the above example, the paraphrase is too close to the original and hence constitutes plagiarism, even though the writer has cited a source.

If you plagiarize, you will be reported to the Responsible Administrator. The College Academic Integrity Policy states: For a third offense, the Responsible Administrator will recommend to the President that the student be expelled from Douglas College.

For more information on plagiarism and how to avoid it, see the Academic Integrity Policy (see link above) and consult a handbook on writing (e.g. The Broadway Pocket Guide to Writing pp. 207-21) or the Douglas College Library website:

TAKE-HOME ESSAYS

Take-home essays must be handed in with the original thesis, with my comments on it, one draft, and both peer-editing sheets. The paper and the accompanying documents must be stapled together. Note: If you dont attend the peer-editing sessions you must still hand in a draft.

Take-home essays should be handed in at the beginning of the class on the day they are due.

Do not include a separate title page. The first page should follow the MLA format. Please see pp. 266-75 in The Broadway Pocket Guide to Writing for a sample essay.

The first page must include a word count. Include quotations in the word count. Stay as close as possible to the word count limit, e.g. an essay that is only 900 words is too short.

Use a 12-point font. Type and double-space the paper.

The take-home essays must have parenthetical documentation of sources and a Works Cited section. Use the MLA format. It will be discussed in class. Please see MLA Style
