ENGL 151 Response Paper
ENGL 151 Response Paper
Assignment Details
Value: 5%
Due Date: Sunday, July 10 (by 11:59pm)
Length:1-2 pages, double-spaced
Instructions
Actively read Gerald Graffs essay Hidden Intellectualism (posted on D2L -- Assignments). Then write a short paper (1-2 page, double-spaced) in which you identify Graffs argument and respond to it in one of the three ways discussed in class (agree, disagree, or a combination of both).
Your goal is not to simply echo Graffs main idea (or contradict it) but instead to contribute to the conversation hes engaged in by bringing in new ideas. If you disagree with him, explain why you disagree and offer evidence to justify your disagreement. If you agree, contribute something in support of his argument (new evidence, a new perspective, some personal knowledge or experience that illustrates his point, etc.). In either case, make sure your explanations connect back clearly to Graffs argument. The end result should be a persuasive response that invigorates Graffs conversation and convinces me to at least acknowledge the soundness of your position.
You may frame your response using one of the templates shared in class, but you are not required to do so.
Format
Please format your paper according to APA 7th edition formatting conventions (except for a References list we wont include that yet). Ive posted a short video on our D2L page to lead you through the process. Youre not required to use APA citations in this paper, but if you quote or paraphrase someone elses work, please introduce your source by name directly (eg. But as Clairemont and Tsitsikas argue in their paper, .).
Response Pathway/Outline
You might consider the following general pathway to guide your response:
Introduce the writer and his general topic.
Summarize his main argument.
Articulate your response.
Explain your response (provide reasons and evidence).
You dont need to write a wrap-up sentence at the end of this paper. Well chat more about conclusions when we get to our larger essays.
