Your project should be between 3,600 and 4,400 words long, with an Appendix containing a notional
2,000 words of data. (In reality, the data can be as long or short as you like – this is a matter for your
judgement – but you should adhere to the word limit for the project per se.) The project must be
submitted no later than Friday 17th May 2024.

Remember! Projects should be anonymous – don’t put your name on any page.

Reference your work using APA (American Psychological Association) style. The latest edition of MS
Word will do this for you:

  • Go to the University’s IT Services webpage
  • Download the latest version of Microsoft Office 365 (it’s free)
  • In Word, select the References tab (from the taskbar at the top)
  • In the References tab, select ‘Style’ as ‘APA’ from the drop-down list (it’s usually the default
    anyway)

Your project should contain:-

A Title. This should be pithy. It’s probably best to write it in its final form last.

An Introduction. This should set out the question to be answered or hypothesis to be tested, etc.,
and justify the raison d’etre of the project. It should review the existing literature in the field, so this
will be where most (although probably not all) of your references will be. It should also briefly state
the theoretical and practical methodologies deployed. The theoretical methodology will be
something like ‘Critical Discourse Analysis’. The practical methodology will be an explanation of how
you collected your data, and the principles behind your choice of it (e.g. ‘A print copy of the
Guardian was purchased on 19th March, and the online version of the same newspaper was
downloaded on the same day. These examples were chosen because …’). I would expect the
Introduction to occupy roughly 900 – 1,100 words altogether (these word-number suggestions are
not hard-and-fast rules, but merely a guide). It’s often a good idea to write the Introduction after
you’ve written the Analysis and Conclusion.

An Analysis. This will be the main body of your project, in which you engage in discourse analysis of
the data. Although this is the biggest part of the project, there’s little to be said about it – it’s the
sort of thing we’ve been practicing in the tutorials each week. I suggest roughly 2,300 – 2,700 words.

A Conclusion. This should recap and summarise the arguments in the analysis, bringing them all
together. It should then reach a conclusion, i.e. answer the question or prove the hypothesis posed
in the Introduction. Finally, it should indicate how the work you’ve done provides an opportunity for
those who come after you to do further work. I suggest roughly 450 – 550 words.

The above are what’s included in the 3,600 – 4,400 words word count. In addition, you also need to
include in the project:-

A list of Works Cited, prepared in APA style.

Appendices containing your data (or stable internet links to your data, in the case of video etc.).
You’re welcome to send me (by email: knsimms@liverpool.ac.uk) work in progress on your project
when you’ve written about 2,500 words (i.e., done the analysis). I’ll mark this as the formative
assessment of the module.
