Project Option B:
Design of Solar PV based standalone/hybrid system
Introduction
Solar photo voltaic system is one of the abundant renewable energy technologies which is not only cost effective but environment friendly as well. The main purpose of this project is to present a design report for a solar-powered standalone or hybrid Solar PV-Battery storage system. This technical study can be based on a virtual community, industry, or application (eg. bus shelter, farm).
Objectives:
The study will be completed in three parts:
- Literature review on solar PV – battery storage based microgrid (standalone and hybrid)
- Site assessment (Weather profile), load and generation demand analysis of the site
- Balance of system design, calculations and discussion. Support the selection of components
through a comparative analysis with other available components in terms of make and cost.
Deliverables:
A technical report needs to address and include all three points mentioned above. Design calculations
must present solar PV system sizing, inverter sizing, battery sizing and charge controller sizing.
Report submission
Below is a guide on how this report should be structured and how the marks for the presentation of
your report will be weighted.
• Title page: It should contain a title of the report (which should be short and informative, do not use
quotation marks), name and student number of author, date.
Executive summary: This should not only provide an overview but also summarise your main
findings.
• Table of content, list of figures and tables
• Introduction: This section should include clearly stated objectives and/or aims as well as
background information.
• Method: This section should enable the reader to replicate the study and explain the procedure.
• Key assumptions: Clearly list all the assumptions you have made, provide rationale or evidence
where applicable.
• Results: These should be presented in detail and appropriately in well labelled and titled graphs
and tables.
Discussion: In this section, you should critically analyse your results. Any problems encountered
during the report and any important observations should be included. Both technoeconomical
details must be presented.
