Assessment 2 Presentation Instructions and 10 Hints

Instructions and Hints:
You are to choose one of the 21 publicly held built environment enterprises - go to "Annual Reports" on vUWS - follow the Assessment 2 presentation template. The PowerPoint template is a starting point - add and subtract as you see fit
Remember vUWS’s anonymous grading is turned on. So, delete your name from your assignment submittals. This guideline is to eliminate any perceived or actual marking bias.
Hints:
1) Be smart - challenge yourself to improve 10% over your previous best presentation effort. Perfection takes time. Give yourself an achievable goal.
2) Be seen - Make yourself visible on the recording and use gestures that are natural to you
3) Be clear - speak at a pace to articulate each syllable. Careful speech appears confident and makes any accent more charming.
4) Be heard - project your voice so a person 10 meters away would be able to hear you
5) Be practical - use at least one anecdote or observation to make a point
6) Be dressed better - dress one level higher than your audience - in this case, business casual
7) Be structured - structure your talk in three sections:
For 2 minutes - Tell everyone why you are sharing with them - make the case that this is vital information
For 11 minutes - state important points with explanation, reasons, and application to the industry or company (use ERA as a substructure)
For 2 minutes - summarise the main ideas of what you just said in #2 in different words and offer your opinion (you have earned the right to express it)
8) Be a minimalist - use minimal words per slide or one graphic (table, chart, picture, or artist rendering) per slide. Reading from slides will not receive full marks
9) Be organised - Write a script or cue cards to help with the organisation of your thoughts. 15 minutes is a long time
10) Be thankful - At the beginning, thank the audience for giving you the chance to share your thoughts. Also, in the end, for listening

Instruction For Using this Template

  • Add colour, graphs, charts, figures or artwork to  each slide as you see fit
  • Write a script for your presentation – this will keep you on track – you are not required to submit it to Subject Coordinator or Tutor.
  • Suggestion: Total number of slides should range from 12 to 18 (recommended but not a requirement) – so expand each section as you think best
  • Refer to the Assessment 2  Instruction and the Grading Matrix in the Learning Guide for further information
  • Delete this slide – do not include in your presentation. Please delete all red lettering in these slides.

Section 1 of 3 (several slides here) – State The General Point(s) of Information You Will Share in Section 2

  1. Tell Your Audience “Why this content is critically important” – discuss things that matter.
  2. Give the back ground, founders, characteristics, logo, motto etc. of each
  3. Always remember:
  • Less words on slides are better – one word or one image is the ultimate.
  • Be conversational in tone – relax and speak calmly.
  • Some emotion  in your voice is good – small flashes emphasise.
  • Pronounce each syllable in each word – take the time and energy to do so.
  • Speak slower rather than faster – slower helps articulation.
  • Project your voice - as if you are talking with someone 10 metres away
  • Some use of hand gestures helps – helps thinking also.
  • Business casual- i.e. collared shirt

Section 2 of 3 (several slides here) – State Specific Points of Information in Detail

  • Tell Your Audience - “State your findings and facts with detail”
  • Not Limited to these – you can  add more areas
    • Structure – multinational, Number and location of offices, publicly held, etc.
    • People – number, credentials, expertise,  etc.
    • Market – trade focus, expertise, clients, partners, projects, etc.
    • Proprietary systems – patents, copyrights, intellectual property,  etc.
    • Financial – profit, turnover, executive compensation, overhead %, direct cost% etc.
    • Risk Management – risk factors, mitigation strategies, successes, failures, etc.
    • New Initiatives – sustainability, digitalisation, globalisation, resilience, industrialisation, productivity, etc.

Section 3 of 3 – Summarise the Main Points and Insights from Section 2

  • Tell Your Audience “What You Told Them in Section 2”. Offer your insights and opinion.
    • Recite in different words, your general conclusions.
    • Recommendations of improvement
  • Your sense of future built environment issues they should address that company has not.
