Guidance for Part A of Assessment 2

Overview

For Part A, you will write a 500-word essay that includes the identification of evidence. Before you begin, ensure you have completed the Search Strategy Activity in Module 2. This section consists of five steps. The first two steps focus on developing your clinical research question and PICO identification, while steps three through five guide you through conducting and documenting a comprehensive literature search.

Step 1: Write a Clinical Research Question and Complete the PICO Table

  • Develop a Clinical Research Question
Extend the discussion from Part A of Assessment 1 (Recent Evidence Summarization) to formulate a clear and focused research question that addresses:
  • A specific patient group or problem
  • An intervention
  • A comparison intervention (if applicable)
  • The expected outcome
    • Complete the PICO Table
Using your research question, complete a PICO table with the following components:
  • P (Patients/Problem):Who is your focus?
  • I (Intervention):What intervention are you considering?
  • C (Comparison):What alternative intervention are you comparing, if applicable?
  • O (Outcome):What result or outcome do you expect?
Note:An example of a completed PICO table is available on vUWS for reference.

Step 2: Identify Keywords and Search Terms

  • Select Keywords
Based on your PICO components, identify relevant keywords and phrases that describe:
  • The problem
  • The intervention
  • The comparison intervention
  • The outcome
    • Prepare a Search Strategy Table
Document these search terms in a table to effectively structure your literature search and ensure you cover all aspects of your research question.

Step 3: Conduct a Comprehensive Literature Search

  • Use Approved Databases
Perform your literature search using PubMed/MEDLINE, ProQuest Central, Scopus, and CINAHL.

Google search is not acceptable for this academic task.

  • Apply Search Terms and Keywords
Use the keywords and search terms identified in Step 2 in various combinations to retrieve a broad yet relevant set of articles.

Step 4: Present Your Search History

  • Save and Present Your Search History
Document the different combinations of keywords used and the corresponding search results.
  • Ensure Article Relevance
Confirm that the articles retrieved are directly related to your clinical research question and PICO components.
  • Document Your Search History
Save a copy of your search history, which should include:
  • The different keyword combinations used
  • The number of results obtained
Aim to retrieve 2030 relevant articles related to your clinical research question.

Step 5: Select One Article and Summarize the Evidence

  • Choose a Recent Article
Select one article which was Published within the last five years.
  • Write a 500-Word Summary
Summarize the chosen article, ensuring that the evidence is clearly linked to each PICO component and that the summary is well-structured and written at a postgraduate level.
  • Include APA 7th Edition Citations
Your summary must include both in-text citations and a complete reference list formatted according to APA 7th edition guidelines.
