In this section give a background to your assignment. Introduce the key topics or concepts giving commentary about the subject matter of your research question. Be careful not to identify the answer for your research question here. Although we want to see references these are to give weight to your introductory comments rather than providing the answer to the research question that you have posed.

Rationale for research question (200 words)

State why this research question is important to answer. Include comments on the impact to the particular population and also why it is important for your own practice to have an answer to this research question.

Inclusion criteria and search terms (500 words)

Inclusion criteria

Consider the following when writing about inclusion criteria:

* The type of study
* Features of the population
* Features of the intervention or issue (qualitative research)
* Features of the control (as applicable) or the context (qualitative)
* The types of outcome

Search Terms using PICO table

Use the table below to develop your search terms. Think about synonyms, trade names and generic names for drugs, colloquial terms, plurals, you are aiming to expand the likelihood of finding appropriate articles by thinking of all the different ways that your research terms could be expressed.

Databases

List the databases that you plan to search. These should be relevant to the research question. For each database state why it is relevant for your particular research question. Decide what limits you will apply to the each of the databases.

Include the search table here in the main body of the assignment (We have not given a word count here as it will vary depending on the question and the number of search terms identified. However, you can approximate that this is equivalent to 1000 words to reflect the effort taken to undertake this search).

Finally state the one article that you have chosen to critically appraise and why. Please make sure that you give the full reference. You must also attach a PDF of your chosen research article to your final submission.

Summary of critical appraisal(800 words)

You must select the appropriate critical appraisal tool and in an Appendix include the completion of the questions within the tool (equivalent to 500 words). In this main section you must then summarise the information you have gained from undertaking the critical appraisal. Please ensure you comment on the quality of the research study, any issues with population selection or data collection, for example. How was the data manipulated and was this appropriate for the research in question? We want to see that you have understood the critical appraisal and that you can discuss the findings in your own words

Application to practice(800 words)

This section allows you to explore how you will apply the findings of the research study to practice. This is a critical section and requires you to focus on the crux of evidence based practice which is using professional judgement along with the best evidence taking into consideration patient values and circumstances. You should consider whether the population in the research matches the population you care for. Consider resource implications. What might the barriers to you implementing the research findings be? Or do you feel that you will be able to implement the research findings completely?

Conclusion(500 words)

Pull together the evidence that you have identified through this activity and make a final statement about whether you feel your identified paper has successfully answered the question that you started with.

Reflect on what you have learnt through undertaking this module and has it changed your view of searching for answers within the literature? How will you continue to incorporate evidence based practice into your clinical work? Reflect on how you will use what you have learnt to influence the practice of those that you work with.
