Executive summary

The following paper discusses the insights of professional identity in the early childhood education and care sector (ECEC). Whilst identifying the current state of the Australian early childhood profession(al) (ECP), the following report considers both national and international contexts. Findings suggest that a lack of mandatory training or qualifications has promoted an identity within ECPs that is contentious and complex. Individuals that are highly trained ECEC graduates are waning in the sector together with those who have little to no training or qualifications. While primary school teachers receive a higher social recognition, the professional identity of infant and preschool teachers is compromised by the perception of a glorified babysitter, and as a result, ECPs they receive a lower level of social status. This report defines key characteristics, strengths, challenges and complexities of the early childhood profession(al) including the history of early childhood education, employment circumstances and gender imbalance within the early childhood sector. Through investigative research, this report identifies current trends in pedagogy, policies and movements of the profession as well as the National Reform and the National Quality Framework and their direct impact on the ECP. The conclusion from the report highlights that the profession would benefit from consistency in required qualifications across early childhood organisations, increased opportunities for professional learning and career progression, professional involvement in changes to government policies, along with fair wages all of which would help to promote a strong professional identity, recognition within the field of education and communities as well as help to motivate more males to work in the early childhood sector.
