WEL206 Facilitating Positive Behaviours

Assessment Item 2 - Case Study - Behaviours of Concern

  • Value: 50%
  • Due Date: 19-May-2025
  • Length: 2000 words

TASK

Case Study: You are employed as a human services consultant and have been asked to review a persons challenging behaviour. This person can be located in either a community, residential, clinical or group home setting. The person has been referred to you for assessment because they are wandering and trying to escape. When they are stopped by a carer, they become physically aggressive, pushing, punching and verbally abusing the carer and those nearby. There are other times however when the person is observed to be quiet and withdrawn. The carer/s have raised concerns about their capacity/ability to manage this behaviour for much longer and are considering sedation.

Your task is to undertake a holistic biopsychosocial assessment to recognise the contextual nature of the behaviour being expressed. In your report you will need to utilise the following headings and outline the details

  1. Client Information
  • Details of the person who presents with distressed behaviours. Include in your assignment their fictional name, age and gender
  • The setting - community, residential, clinical or group home setting
  • Outline any considerations relating to this person that needs to be considered in the assessment process. This can include; being a refugee, identifying as LGBTIQ, a victim survivor of family violence, being culturally diverse, religious considerations etc
  • Outline any consideration as they relate to the context; rural locale, staffing, staffing shortages, financial issues, insecure accommodation etc
  • Any other relevant information required to provide context for example, health issues, family background, education etc.
  1. Prepare an ABC Chart
  • Provide an ABC Chart as outlined in Topic 4 (table format) with at least three entries. The purpose of this is to identify and chart the behaviour.
  • At least three line items are to be included. Please note that this chart will be further developed in the assessment section so detail needs to be consistent with the example provided.
  • Make of note of the impact of this behaviour on both the person and others.
  1. Outline the role of assessment in distress behaviour
  2. Outline a holistic and person-centred assessment including the biological, psychological, social and environmental contexts influencing the persons behaviour. It is also important to link this to the ABC chart and other functional assessments.
  3. Some suggested strategies to respond to the distressed behaviours
  4. Reflection to include any critical learning you have gained by completing this assignment any considerations for practice

  • demonstrate understanding of, and ability to utilise a range of behavioural change models.
  • assess the respective roles of behavioural, social, environmental, psychological, economic, political and personal aspects, including staff interactions, as influences on behaviour.
  • demonstrate an understanding of the potential impacts of challenging behaviours on staff, organizations and family caregivers.
  • utilise the concepts of functional analysis, functional assessment and the use of charting (ABC - Antecedent Behaviour and Consequence) as tools for predicting, understanding and analyzing behaviours.
