Purpose To develop a narrated in-service presentation that provides a case history for your chosen forensic mental health patient from the list of videos provided below.
Description
For this assignment you are required to develop a narrated in-service presentation (up to 12 PowerPoint slides - including a title slide and a reference slide with a narrated voice recording), which addresses the listed topics below.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Select one (1) of the forensic patient vignettes below and prepare a case history using PowerPoint with audio presentation describing your chosen case. You must include the following details about the case in your presentation:
The title slide must include: Your name
The target audience for your presentation
An outline of the presentation
A brief description of reasons for your choice of patient and why it is relevant to your target audience.
The next ten (10) clinical slides must discuss:
Demographics
Psychopathology and theoretical perspectives
DSM-5 mental health diagnosis
Previous mental health history, interventions, and adherence to treatments (if any)
Legal considerations/Criminal outline of the offence
Social determinants of health
Criminogenic needs, substance misuse, and mental health risk factors
Structured treatment plan consistent with diagnosis, cultural considerations and social and emotional wellbeing
Your presentation will consist of 12 slides including a title slide and the reference list (slide 12) at the end with 10 minutes of narrative description. Use of AI tools such as ChatGPT to generate content is not permitted; use of paraphrasing and language editing tools such as Grammarly is not recommended.
Please find details below of four forensic patients. These descriptions include a brief outline of each forensic patient and there are other YouTube videos and podcasts related to each case. An example of one video has been provided for each case.
Your presentation must include appropriate academic references with details on the slides and also listed at the end in APA 7 style.

Ivan Milat received 7 life sentences for what became known as the Backpacker Murders. He died of cancer in prison on the 27th October 2019. There are many factors which point to Factor 2 psychopathy.

- Martin John Bryant
The Port Arthur massacre in 1996 remains the most documented and reported mass murder in Australian history. Martin Bryant was 29-years of age when he killed 35 people in Tasmania and injured 23 others. He was diagnosed with borderline intelligence (IQ 66) and a cluster B personality disorder. Martin was the first murderer in Australia to be sentenced to life without parole.

William MacDonald (born Allen Ginsberg) was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a young man and became known in the 1960s as "The Mutilator". He was named Australia's most feared serial killer at the time. He died in prison in 2015, after being certified insane. Was the early diagnosis accurate? Or was he psychopathic?

Outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- Identify the psychosocial determinants of people with complex and difficult behaviour in the psychiatric and criminal justice systems and the impact of crime on health
- Demonstrate familiarity with current legislation in regard to forensic patients and mentally disordered offenders under the Mental Health Act and the practical application of this legislation at a systems level
- Discuss the process of effective assessment and engagement of mentally disordered offenders in a range of settings including prison, community and forensic hospitals
- Appraise current tools and strategies to assess and better manage risk of potential violence of mentally disordered offenders towards others
- Reflect on personal values and attitudes arising when working with people whose behaviour and presentation is challenging and confronting and identify and resolve ethical dilemmas specifically arising with mentally disordered offenders
- Examine and evaluate issues related to cultural safety and vulnerable populations (such as Indigenous Australians) relevant to the delivery of care in forensic settings
- Critically examine current and developing theories (and related research) of personality development, psychopathy, ASPD and BPD and future directions in the provision of forensic mental health services
