Title: Experience of disability discrimination in health and social care, UK

Section 1: Introduction

Background

Reasons why the research is interesting/important (rationale)

Areas the review will cover (150 words)

EXAMPLE:

The Equality and Human Rights Commission, UK (2022) defined disability discriminationas unfair treatment or putting an individual at a disadvantage for a reason that relates tothe persons disability, as provided in the Equality Act (2010). The Office of National Statistics ONS, (2022) suggests that 46.5% of disabled people in the UK are unemployed. Evidence suggests that disabled people suffer discrimination at work despite, the laws and policies to reduce the prevalence of disability within the healthcare sector. According to the NHS England (2019), disabled NHS staff are more likely to experience harassment, bullying and abuse as compared to non-disabled staff. Thus, this literature review explores two studies on the disability discrimination in healthcare sector, UK.

Section 2: Methodology (350)

How did you choose the literature you have used in your assignment? How did you conduct your search? This section must include:

Selection/inclusion criteria for this review.

For example:

Articles must be published in English language,

peer-reviewed, published within the last 10 years,

Study must focus on the UK context

Primary research (qualitative, quantitative and or mixed method)

Exclusion criteria include:

Articles published in non-English language

Published before 2012

Study was focused on other countries and not the UK

Secondary research (systematic review, literature review)

Search strategies:

How did you search for the articles?

Relevant articles were searched for on Google scholar, using a combination of listed key words that are related to the topic. After several search attempts, 100 articles were found but the two articles which met the inclusion criteria, were selected.

Section 3- Literature Review (400 words)

Write your literature review. Summarise your articles and tell us about the issue. Remember, whilst it is satisfactory to summarise them, the better assignments will also critically evaluate them to better inform us of your knowledge.

Example

Hackett et al. (2020) conducted a cohort study involving 871 participants, to explore the link between disability discrimination and well-being. The findings of the study show that perceived disability-related discrimination is linked with poorer well-being. These findings underscore the need for interventions to combat disability discrimination. The findings of this study was based on participants self-report on their experiences of disability discrimination during the past 12 months and was therefore subject to recall bias. Kip et al. (2001) suggest that recall bias could impact on the reliability of self-report in cohort studies.

Similarly, Egbe (2022) investigated the prevalence of disability discrimination in the NHS..

Section 4- Conclusion (100 words)

Example

In conclusion, the two articles reviewed, show evidence to suggest the prevalence and impact of disability discrimination among disabled healthcare workers in the UK. The review has shown that this is a key challenge that needs to be addressed. Organisations need to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that disabled people have equal opportunities and access to resources.
