Health priority Location
Health priority Location
Mental health Dubbo
For this section you will interact with your team (on discussion board) as you would in a real-world setting. You are to gather evidence and information (individually) on your chosen health priority and engage in discussions with your team, using the points for discussion outlined below.
Tostart, investigate the following:
Explore your chosen health priority and the impact it has on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in relation to burden of disease;Identify and explore the Aboriginal nation that your health priority is located on;Reflect on the principles for collaboration and engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; and
Consider the characteristics of successful health promotion programs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities that could be related to your health priority.
Use the information you have gathered above to start posting in your group under these prompt questions, remember to not just add your information you should be able to discuss and reflect on the information you find:
Name your health priority and the Aboriginal nation that your location is on?
Identify what social determinants of health may have contributed to this progression of this health priority and how/why?
What does this disease mean in terms of quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
What could be done to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples with this health condition? (refers to question 3 and 4 above)
Share a summary of where you gathered your information from (post names/titles, links etc)
Within your online discussion group there will be an Assessment link/folder, that you must post your answers in to receive marks for Part A. This section is informal, there is no allocated word count or formal referencing required. This step is to introduce your topic to your colleagues (peers in your group) to start open conversations about what you might not have known, what you already knew and how you can support others to build on their own investigation. This information will directly inform Part B.
Note
To gain full marks for Part A you will continue demonstrating commitment to understanding your health priority area (by posting additional posts) that contains additional information or your critical reflection of the content. This can be in the form of uploading a research paper to your discussion thread, writing critical reviews on literature about the chosen topic, sharing links to relevant articles or briefly describe ideas about your topic from the course content. You are required to be active on the assessment thread to receive additional marks above a pass grade. (Please refer to the rubric.)
Working within your team
All team members should contribute to the assessment task equally. It is therefore important that the team maintain regular communication throughout the assessment period. You are to collaborate with your peers (as you would in the workplace in a multidisciplinary team to achieve evidence informed care for patients). This will demonstrate interprofessional relationships by sharing resources and knowledge to benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as well as understanding the cultural needs or considerations you should have when working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
To facilitate teamwork for the assessment:
Five Groups will be set up in your tutorial discussion board under the heading Assessment 3. You will be allocated to one of these groups after you have emailed your tutor with your preferences in health priority areas. This will provide access to your own discussion forum, file exchange system and task lists, as well as ability to email other team members. Ensure you are using this system for communication, rather than non-university mediums (e.g. Messenger) to ensure full marks on the assessment.
Students are to engage in constructive and informative conversations to their peer's threads/post with a minimum of 5 posts. The markers will need to be able to see a conversation not just one reply and see constructive engagement and feedback given to each other that can consist of sharing an article and/or providing a critical commentary on literature about your chosen topic and you will gain additional marks above a pass grade for this interaction. (Please refer to the rubric.)
Each online tutorial group will have their online academic tutor who will monitor the online discussion posts, the tutor will be able to comment on your post, to provide support and will observe if students are being active in the discussions. You are required to complete your initial responses to the questions, to complete ongoing discussion about your topic and provide support and contribution to your peers learning journey in the discussion board posts to pass the assessment Part A criteria. Please refer to the timeline, to give yourself enough time to adequately plan and engage with other students.
This section will be marked on the discussion board and will NOT need to be submitted via Turnitin. All students will be required to post and engage with other students by Friday, 14th of October 5pm to receive marks for the Part A component of the rubric anything posted after this time will not be marked.
Part B (Group presentation)
As a health professional, when working with Aboriginal people it is important to be able to identify what constitutes culturally safe delivery of care, whether this be in a one-on-one setting or referring the individual onto a community led program. For Part B as a group, you are to summarise your research findings from Part A and collate the information to present to their colleagues in an educational manner. As a group, you are to prepare a PowerPoint presentation on your chosen health priority that includes a 10-minute oral recording of your PowerPoint information. This can be recorded on Canvas via Panopto OR Zoom and submitted. Note: Treat this as a professional presentation just like you would undertake when working as a health professional. Each student should have a turn in presenting information, if it is not clear that all students have presented then full marks can not be achieved. Be sure to introduce yourself at each point.
The presentation should include 7-9 slides:
Title slide (1 slide)
Acknowledgement of Country (1 slide)
Introduction (Chosen health priority and why it is important) (1slide)
Background (Burden of disease short/long term impact, morbidity/ mortality rates, and risk factors include stats)
Historical impact (Describe how history has impacted the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to the chosen health priority) (1 Slide)
Describe health promotion strategies to address the health priority (To consider and address when developing strategies: What can you do to deliver culturally safe information and care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients that are experiencing the chosen health priority? What cultural considerations should you practice?) (Note: remember you are working in multi-disciplinary teams. This slide should be the bulk of your presentation) (2-3 slides)
Reference slide (1 slide)
Each aspect should be well argued, respectful, and supported by contemporary, relevant literature (within the last 10 years). Part B should have a minimum of 6 references (with at least 2 sources being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander authors).
Part B: Oral Presentation will be due via Turnitin by Friday, 21stof October by 11.59pm.
