Part A: Knowledge Questions - Ian

Case Study

Ian meets with an average of 5 clients a day and he needs to enter the handwritten case notes he takes during his sessions into the electronic case management system on the same day he sees the clients according to Directions Policy and Procedure. This regularly causes Ian to leave work 30 minutes later than his workday ends. He feels stressed he can’t fit everything into his workday and it’s causing problems at home when he’s late to pick up his son at day care. He is becoming concerned about his work life balance as he spends time every Sunday getting prepared for work on Monday which cuts into the time he spends with his child. He’s also having trouble sleeping as he keeps thinking about work.

Ian’s current stress management strategies are:

  • Smoke cannabis every weekend while his son is with his ex-partner. Ian enjoys this, but finds he is sleeping more and getting less done.
  • Play video games every weekday evening after his son has gone to bed until 2am.
  • Buy takeout most nights because he’s too tired to cook when he gets home from work. Ian worries this isn’t good for him or his son.

Ian’s strengths are:

  • Ian used to train CrossFit, and he still has friends who he could work out with. He wants to get back to training but can’t see how he has time.
  • Ian finds playing video games relieves his stress.
  • Ian enjoys spending time with his 5 year old son and wants to help his son to live an active life and play sport too. He is keen to get his son into AFL Auskick.
  1. Explain how Ian’s three current coping strategies are or are not meeting the desired outcome of relieving his stress and give suggestions (based on his strengths) as to how he might adjust his three coping strategies. Make sure you discuss work/life balance in your answer.
  2. What is one support available to Ian in his workplace? What is one support available to Ian outside of his workplace?

Part B: Develop a Stress Management Plan (scenario)

Lou is a Youth Support Worker at the Directions Community Centre and is meeting their client Ash tomorrow. Ash’s Mum died in a car accident 2 months ago and as Ash has major conflict with his dad, Ash has refused to live at home since his Mum died. He has been couch surfing and occasionally sleeping rough. Ash presented at Directions intoxicated for his last appointment and Lou had to tell Ash to leave. Lou doesn’t think they handled the situation well and they feel their supervisor has implied they did the wrong thing, but Lou doesn’t know exactly what, if anything, they did wrong. Lou is worried Ash may be intoxicated tomorrow as well, and they need to tell Ash he has not been offered a place in youth accommodation due to not meeting the criteria. Lou has a busy day tomorrow with a staff meeting, a 1 hour online training session and 6 clients booked for appointments (there is usually a maximum of 5 clients a day but one client requested an urgent appointment and Lou agreed) and Lou can’t afford to go over Ash’s 30 minute allocated timeslot for his appointment. Lou expects Ash will be angry when he is told he isn’t able to go to the accommodation. Lou is reluctant to ask their supervisor for support because they’re concerned she will think they’re not a good worker. Lou feels very stressed and has been experiencing more anxiety than usual. Lou has made an appointment with their GP next week to discuss increasing their anxiety medication.

    1. Look at all the activities Lou has planned for the next day and explain how Lou could organize their workload to minimize their stress
    2. Explain why Lou speaking to their supervisor before meeting with Ash could be beneficial.
    3. Ash has a diagnosed mental health condition. Explain the benefits of Lou disclosing this to their supervisor as something affecting their work.
  1. Complete all parts (a, b, c, d, e) of the Part B Personal Stress Management Plan Template below based on this scenario.

Part B: My Personal Stress Management Plan: Lou (worker for Ash)

a. Stressful Work Situation List all possible stressors for Lou in the case scenario b. Lou’s Triggers What about this situation might be stressful for Lou? c. Lou’s Stress Responses How could Lou react physically, mentally, or emotionally to this situation? d. Lou’s Stress Management Strategies What could Lou do to prevent, reduce, and manage possible stress in this situation?

Describe 2 ways Lou could monitor and review the effectiveness of these stress management strategies to make sure they’re effective next time Lou feels stressed in the workplace.

Part C: Develop a stress management plan (for yourself)

  1. List three situations common to a community services workplace that would likely be stressors for you personally as a worker. You can base this on situations you find stressful in your current work, or life and complete the Stress Management Plan for yourself.
  2. Identify your personal triggers
  3. Identify your stress response
  4. Give a stress management strategy you could try for each situation. Make sure there are three different strategies.

Part C: Your personal stress management plan

a. Stressful Work Situation List three possible stressors in a community services workplace b. My Triggers What about this situation might be stressful for me? c. My Stress Responses How could I react physically, mentally, or emotionally to this situation? d.
