Rationale
The purpose of this assessment is to conduct in-depth research on a special interest tourism, apply academic concepts and theories and examine the management issues within this area.
Task Description
Select a special interest tourism area that is of interest to you. What concepts and theories apply/do not apply to this area of SIT? What types of tourist markets are attracted? Is this SIT location specific? If so, where? What social, economic and environmental impacts or issues arise from this SIT? Demonstrate your findings using examples of real-world SIT locations/destinations.
Task instructions
Presentations are conducted in tutorials weekly. Your tutor will allocate the week you present.
The presentation MUST address the following points.
Be informative, interesting, engaging and educational that is your colleagues must learn something
have an introduction to the SIT niche this should include a definition, so your audience knows what you are discussing
trends and social changes which saw the evolution and development of the niche
links with SIT definitions, concepts and theories (what kind of SIT is it, and why is it SIT?)
types of tourist markets the niche attracts (demographics, geographics, psychographic profile, size of the market)
impacts or issues resulting from this niche both positive and negative. Eg rock climbers destroying indigenous rock art/ rail trails bringing cycling tourists to isolated towns
a critical examination of this SIT niche. Eg while some stakeholders may benefit but what stakeholders are negatively impacted? Why? NB This is NOT a promotional presentation where you sell your SIT
incite and invite the audience to ask questions
Powerpoint slides need to be engaging with images. Videos are not to be more than 2 minutes in length and are not counted as part of your presentation time
Referencing and in-text citations should be as per the SCU Harvard format.
Harvard style reference list including three (3) academic references must be included on the last slide of your PowerPoint presentation. The references must be evident as research within the presentation.
PowerPoint slides with a Harvard Reference List must be submitted through Turnitin after the in class presentation

Important note: In order to achieve a passing grade in this unit you must submit all assessment tasks and obtain a score of at least 50% of the total assessment marks for the unit.
