Submission date: March 8

This assessment is comprised of 2 elements:

  • a research report and a recorded presentation on your reports findings. NOTE: AI Category RED.2 The use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT or similar) is not permitted for this assessment. This includes AI-based translation tools such as DeepL and language enhancement applications such as Grammarly.

RESEARCH REPORT OPTION 1: CLOUD COMPUTING

In 2000 words or more (excluding executive summary, table of contents, and references): Describe the evolution of cloud computing in concise terms. Make predictions for future directions of related technologies. Clouds process large amounts of data. Who gathers and owns such data? In what ways is this data being used to help improve future generations of cloud technology? The widespread use of cloud computing and related devices will have certain secondary effects upon society. Identify some of these secondary effects and their broader implications. Identify any related ethical problems and/or considerations.

RESEARCH REPORT OPTION 2: ZERO-TRUST SECURITY

In 2000 words or more (excluding executive summary, table of contents, and references): Describe in succinct terms what is meant by the concept of zero-trust security. Describe the evolution of zero-trust security, providing select examples. Zero-trust models process sensitive data. Who gathers and owns such data? Are there vulnerabilities? If so, where? In what ways is this data being used to help improve future versions of zero-trust models? What do you think the future directions (or trends) in trust as it relates to cybersecurity will be, and why? Identify any related ethical problems and/or considerations.

Learning outcomes to be assessed

  • Recognise the ethical issues in computing and communications related to, for instance, privacy, security, and verification systems. Recognise different timeframes corresponding to the origin and evolution of areas of computer science. Make predictions about the future of different areas of computing based on current trends and knowledge. Analyse complex ethical dilemmas such as legal responsibility, uses of private data, data protection, and so forth. Effectively present findings and solutions verbally and in writing

Research report marking scheme

85% 100%: A superb research report. The report will include a detailed analysis of the topic area. There should be clear evidence of relevant background research that is both thorough and includes evidence (referenced) of a high level of understanding of the available academic materials. The report will be well organised, and the written material should be of the highest standard.

70% 84%: An excellent research report. The report will show a thorough understanding of the research topic and an appreciation of the ethical considerations. The student will have performed a detailed analysis of the problem area and engaged with the available academic materials in their background research (referenced).

60% 69%: The research report has been written to a reasonable standard. The report will show a clear understanding of the topic being discussed and provide an analysis of the topic area and the ethical considerations. There should be evidence of relevant background research (referenced). There may be some areas which have been overlooked.

50% 59%: The presentation of the report is reasonably clear and demonstrates a familiarity with the topic. The organisation of the report is fairly clear however there are clear signs of weakness in the area of (referenced) research, standard of written work, ethical considerations or future direction of the technology. Overall, the students understanding of the topic area is sound.

40% 49%: The report suggests the author has fairly basic understanding of the research topic. A limited amount of background research will be undertaken (and referenced). There may be signs of some confusion about the ethical or future direction of the technology being described and the report may contain no more than one error or misconception.

30% 39%: Although the report shows a clear attempt to understand the topic area, some significant areas have been neglected or missed out entirely e.g., insufficient referencing of the available academic material, poor definition of the technology being discussed, poor evaluation of the future direction of the technology, little or no consideration given to the ethical problems surrounding the technology.

0 29%: The report shows a poor understanding of the topic area and contains several serious errors. There is a lack of referencing and a general poor standard of written work.
